Ahmedabad Leads in ‘Obesity-Free Gujarat’ Campaign

Ahmedabad city is taking significant steps in the fight against obesity through the ‘Obesity-Free Gujarat’ campaign. This initiative aims to promote healthy lifestyles and create awareness about obesity among the citizens. The campaign is part of a broader effort led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who has established a steering committee to oversee its implementation.

The campaign includes various activities across government, private, and non-profit organizations. One notable development is the launch of a dietitian outpatient department (OPD) at the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. This facility is designed to support patients suffering from obesity-related conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Patients can receive free diet plans tailored to their needs, making this service accessible to all.

In addition to medical support, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad is partnering with Novo Nordisk India to strengthen the obesity care ecosystem. This collaboration will focus on research, policy advocacy, and building the capacity of health systems to manage obesity more effectively. IIM Ahmedabad plans to develop a model framework for obesity clinics and educational materials for healthcare professionals.

Moreover, the Gujarat State Yoga Board is organizing yoga camps across Ahmedabad, teaching techniques like Surya Namaskar and Bhujangasana. These camps aim to promote physical fitness and mental well-being, particularly among youth and women, which can help mitigate obesity and stress.

Schools in Ahmedabad are also participating by conducting awareness programs about nutrition and physical activity. Many schools have banned junk food and are encouraging the consumption of healthier grains like ragi and bajra. This initiative is crucial to prevent childhood obesity, which can lead to severe health issues in adulthood.

The campaign does not stop at hospitals and schools; private hospitals in Ahmedabad are also providing specialized services for obesity management, including diet planning, medication, and bariatric surgery. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are actively working in communities, offering free health camps focused on obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

The collaborative efforts of government bodies, private institutions, and NGOs showcase a comprehensive approach to tackling obesity. Initiatives such as free services at civil hospitals, innovative research in private healthcare, and community-based programs by NGOs are all part of a united front against obesity.

As part of the campaign, the Ahmedabad district is encouraging people to use stairs instead of elevators to promote physical activity. Messages like ‘You Burn Calories’ are displayed near stairs to inspire employees and visitors to embrace a healthier lifestyle.

Through these combined efforts, Ahmedabad could serve as a model not only for Gujarat but also for the entire nation in combating obesity. The ‘Obesity-Free Gujarat’ initiative highlights the importance of public awareness and community participation in achieving health goals and improving the overall well-being of society.
