Ahmedabad Police is taking a big step towards modern policing. They are developing a new mobile application that will work with their existing criminal tracking system, known as Pinac (Police Information and Criminal Analysis). This app aims to give police officers quick access to important criminal data while they are on duty. The goal is to improve the efficiency of everyday patrolling, surprise checks, and overall law enforcement operations.
Pinac was introduced in 2012 and has become a crucial tool for investigators across Gujarat. It allows police to track criminals, analyse criminal networks, and access data about vehicles and individuals. The new mobile app will serve as a handy tool for officers in the field, enabling them to access vital information instantly, even in areas with low network connectivity. This is possible due to the app’s offline functionality.
Recently, during the Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025 in Ahmedabad, police tested a facial recognition feature that is linked to the Pinac system. This feature scans live CCTV footage and matches faces against the police database. A beta version of the app was given to 700 police personnel for testing during the event. Reports indicate that the system flagged around 100 individuals with previous criminal records. Although no arrests were made, these suspects were monitored closely throughout the event.
A senior police officer commented on the trial, saying, “The facial recognition module worked effectively in real-time identification. We alerted ground staff, and suspects were kept under watch throughout the event.” This shows how technology can help police stay ahead in preventing crime.
The mobile application is being developed in-house by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch. It is designed to function seamlessly, both online and offline. Field officers will be able to access facial recognition data, vehicle information, and criminal histories in an instant. This will greatly enhance their ability to respond to incidents and manage criminal activities.
In addition to improving the current system, police plan to expand the database to include criminals from other districts and states. This broader database will provide officers with more information and support them in their investigations.
While the software has been tested successfully, the full rollout of the application depends on securing high-quality hardware. The estimated cost for this hardware is around ₹15 lakh. The police department is currently waiting for funding approval to proceed with this important step.
This initiative highlights the commitment of Ahmedabad Police to use technology for better policing. With the integration of the Pinac system into a mobile app, officers will be more equipped to handle crime effectively and efficiently. As they continue to modernize their approach, the safety and security of citizens are expected to improve significantly. Overall, this development is a positive move towards making Ahmedabad a safer city for everyone.
