Ahmedabad is taking steps to solve the rainwater problem in the Vejalpur and Bodakdev areas. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has approved a project to develop Sponge Parks under the Urban Flood Risk Management Program. This initiative aims to address flooding in the city.

The Chairman of the Municipal Water Supply Committee, Dilipbhai Bagdhiya, stated that in the Vejalpur ward, a plot near the Torrent Power Substation will be excavated to create a detention tank area. This area will collect rainwater from the surrounding regions. As a result, the issue of water logging in the area will be resolved. The collected rainwater will be allowed to percolate through the detention tank.

This process will recharge the groundwater, raising its levels. To manage excessive rainfall, a flap valve will be installed to prevent overflow when the tank is full.

In addition, another Sponge Park will be created in the Bodakdev ward, near Ashok Vatika Road. Similar excavation work will take place here, allowing for the collection and storage of rainwater. This will also help tackle the water logging problem. The rainwater will be directed to the detention tank area for percolation, ensuring groundwater recharge.

These Sponge Parks will not only serve a vital purpose during rainy seasons but will also offer recreational activities and facilities during dry seasons. Gardening and horticulture will be included in the design of the parks, providing a pleasant environment for residents.

The project aims to improve urban flood management and ensure that Ahmedabad becomes more resilient to heavy rains. With this initiative, the city is set to enhance its drainage systems and promote sustainable water management practices.

The Sponge Parks are funded by a grant from the National Disaster Mitigation Fund, amounting to approximately INR 1.46 crores for the Vejalpur site and INR 73.43 lakhs for the Bodakdev site. The contractor for the project is Fantastic Corporation.

This is an important step for Ahmedabad, which is one of the most populous cities in India. The city faces significant challenges from urban flooding, especially during the monsoon season. These Sponge Parks will not only help manage rainwater but also improve the quality of life for residents by providing green space and recreational opportunities.

In summary, the development of Sponge Parks in Ahmedabad will address rainwater issues, recharge groundwater, and contribute to a greener urban landscape. This project reflects the city’s commitment to sustainable development and disaster management.
