Ahmedabad to Install Sound Barriers to Reduce Noise Pollution

Ahmedabad is taking action to tackle noise pollution caused by increasing traffic. The city has seen a significant rise in noise levels, with transportation contributing to about 70% of the total noise pollution. In response, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has planned to install sound barriers on seven flyovers at an estimated cost of ₹22 crores.

The selected flyovers include Soni Ni Chali Bridge, Anjali Bridge, Bopal Bridge, Jivaraj Park Bridge, IIM Bridge, Gujarat College Bridge, and Rani P Flyover. These barriers aim to reduce noise levels in residential areas near these busy roads.

The decision follows a study conducted on existing sound barriers at Income Tax Junction and Thakkarbapanagar flyover bridges. This survey was carried out by IIT Ram, and its findings were crucial in designing the new sound barriers.

According to Devang Dhan, the Chairman of the Municipal Standing Committee, the study revealed noise levels on these flyovers exceeded acceptable limits (30 to 50 dB). To tackle this issue, the project will use polycarbonate composite panels, known for their durability and effectiveness in sound insulation. The panels will be installed at heights of 2.00 meters and 2.50 meters, with a thickness of 120 mm.

In addition to the primary panels, reflective panels will be placed on the sound barriers to further reduce noise. The panels will incorporate water-repellent properties which help in sound absorption. Each panel will be anchored to structural steel beams secured to a reinforced concrete (RCC) crash barrier for stability.

The expected lifespan of these sound barriers is around 15 to 20 years, with a maintenance guarantee of 60 months. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve urban living conditions by addressing environmental concerns in Ahmedabad.

As Ahmedabad continues to grow, projects like these are essential for maintaining a balance between development and quality of life. The installation of sound barriers is just one of many steps the city is taking to ensure a healthier environment for its residents. Effective urban planning will be crucial in addressing the challenges posed by rapid urbanisation and increased vehicle traffic.

With the construction of these barriers, the city hopes to provide relief to residents who have been affected by the constant noise from traffic. This project represents a commitment to enhancing the urban landscape while prioritising the well-being of the community. As the barriers are implemented, residents can look forward to quieter streets and improved living conditions in the bustling city of Ahmedabad.
