Ahmedabad University Launches 24/7 Student-Run Tinkerers’ Lab

Ahmedabad University has taken a big step in engineering education by opening the Tinkerers’ Lab. This lab is unique because it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is entirely managed by students. The lab aims to provide hands-on experience with the latest tools and technologies. It helps students turn their ideas into real models, whether for class projects, startups, or national competitions.

The Tinkerers’ Lab is equipped with high-end tools. It has 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics workstations, machine tools, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments. Various materials are also available for students to build and test their prototypes at any time. If students want to turn their projects into real businesses, they can connect with VentureStudio, the university’s startup incubator.

This exciting initiative is a collaboration between Ahmedabad University, the Maker Bhavan Foundation, AIA Engineering Ltd., and Arvind Composites. Piyush Shah, a member of the Maker Bhavan Foundation, said, “Real engineering happens when you try, fail, learn, and try again. This lab gives students the freedom to do exactly that.”

The lab is located within the School of Engineering and Applied Science. It complements other hands-on spaces like PRAYAS Shala and a Fabrication Shop. These facilities connect students with live projects and internships through industry partnerships.

Prof. Sunil Kale, the Dean of the School, highlighted that the lab is part of the university’s focus on practical, hands-on learning and creative thinking. Damayanti Bhattacharya, the CEO of the Maker Bhavan Foundation, pointed out that the lab helps students shift from being mere consumers of knowledge to becoming creators.

The lab will also collaborate with LEAP (Learning Engineering by Activity through Projects), a program from the IIT Madras Incubation Cell. This program will bring workshops, faculty training, and project-based learning to enhance practical learning for students.

AIA Engineering supports the lab as part of its commitment to technical education. Meanwhile, Arvind Composites built a lightweight mezzanine floor for the lab using advanced materials.

Starting this semester, all engineering students at Ahmedabad University can use the lab. They can take part in LEAP boot camps, interdisciplinary build-a-thons, and mentoring sessions that focus on real-world problem-solving. This initiative aims to inspire students and prepare them for challenges in their careers.

The Tinkerers’ Lab is part of a larger trend in education that emphasises hands-on learning. It encourages students to experiment and innovate. This kind of environment is vital for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The lab is not just a space for tinkering; it embodies the philosophy of learning by doing. It provides students with the tools they need to explore their ideas and bring them to life. By fostering creativity and collaboration, the Tinkerers’ Lab aims to shape the next generation of engineers who can tackle real-world challenges.

Ahmedabad University is committed to creating an academic ecosystem that promotes active, hands-on, and experiential learning. With the Tinkerers’ Lab, students have the chance to engage directly with materials and technologies, enhancing their learning experience and preparing them for future challenges.

In summary, the Tinkerers’ Lab at Ahmedabad University is a significant addition to engineering education. It offers students an opportunity to innovate, collaborate, and turn their ideas into reality, supporting India’s broader goals of technological advancement and innovation.
