The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has a grand budget of ₹15,000 crore for the upcoming year. Among this, ₹1,000 crore is set aside for road construction. However, there is a notable lack of a material testing lab for these roads. This lab is essential to ensure the quality of materials used in road building. In response to this issue, the AMC has now approved plans to set up a material testing lab at a cost of ₹2.74 crore.

Ahmedabad has faced many road-related problems, especially during the monsoon season. Potholes and cave-ins have become common sights after heavy rains. In 2017, a public litigation led to action against over 30 engineers. They were held responsible when roads worth ₹400 crore washed away due to poor construction.

Jatin Patel, the deputy mayor, highlighted issues like the IOC bogus billing scam, which resulted in the blacklisting of three contractors. The start of the monsoon season in Ahmedabad revealed around 3,000 potholes after just 15 inches of rain. Repairing 307 of these potholes cost the city ₹5 lakh.

With the monsoon of 2025 approaching, the AMC has decided to establish a material testing lab. However, there is no fixed timeline for the completion of this project yet. This new lab aims to prevent future issues with road quality and ensure that the materials used meet required standards.

The AMC’s budget also includes several other infrastructure projects. They plan to construct 15,000 new housing units, with a budget of ₹2,300 crore. Additionally, there are plans to build and resurface about 550 km of roads, projected to cost ₹1,200 crore.

A major focus of the AMC is on sustainability and climate resilience. The budget includes provisions for developing lakes and water management projects, costing ₹100 crore. Sustainability efforts will also involve using recycled materials and energy-efficient machinery in road construction.

To enhance public transport, AMC plans to add 120 buses to the AMTS fleet and set up a Multi-Modal Transport Hub. They are also exploring the possibility of implementing a Light Railway Transport system to improve connectivity.

Despite these positive developments, the absence of a material testing lab raises concerns about the effectiveness of the AMC’s road budget. The city must ensure that funds are used wisely to build durable roads. The establishment of the lab is a step in the right direction, but timely completion is crucial.

As Ahmedabad continues to grow, the demand for quality infrastructure will only increase. The AMC’s actions will significantly impact the city’s future. Effective management of road projects and quality testing will be key to maintaining safe and reliable roads for residents. The new lab could help turn the tide on persistent road issues if implemented properly.

In conclusion, while Ahmedabad’s budget for roads is impressive, the lack of a material testing lab has been a significant oversight. The AMC’s decision to set one up is a positive move, but the city must act quickly to ensure its timely completion. Only then can residents expect safer roads and better infrastructure in the future.
