Ahmedabad’s Anti-Mosquito Drive: ₹6 Lakh Collected from 276 Commercial Units

In a strong effort to combat mosquito-borne diseases, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has taken action against several commercial establishments. Health officials discovered that many hospitals and businesses were breeding mosquitoes. As a result, they issued notices and collected fines from violators.

During recent inspections in areas like Maninagar, Lambha, Bodakdev, Thaltej, and Khadia, AMC collected a total of ₹6 lakh from 276 commercial units. These inspections targeted various types of businesses, including scrap shops, hotels, and hospitals. Health officials found mosquito breeding in scrap metal heaps, old tyres, terraces, water tanks, refrigerator trays, and bird feeders.

This initiative is part of a larger effort to reduce mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria. The female Anopheles mosquito is responsible for transmitting malaria, which remains a serious health threat despite being preventable and treatable.

India has made notable progress in controlling malaria. According to the World Malaria Report 2024 by the World Health Organization (WHO), the country has seen a 69% drop in malaria cases and a 68% reduction in related deaths from 2017 to 2023. Currently, India contributes only 0.8% of global malaria cases. In 2024, India exited the WHO’s High Burden to High Impact group, marking a significant milestone in its fight against malaria.

Globally, the WHO reports that since the year 2000, 2.2 billion malaria cases and 12.7 million deaths have been prevented. While 45 countries and one territory have been certified as malaria-free, the disease continues to claim nearly 600,000 lives each year, with the African region being the most affected.

India aims to eliminate malaria entirely by 2030, with a target of zero cases by 2027. The recent actions taken by the AMC are crucial in supporting this national goal. By targeting breeding grounds in commercial areas, officials hope to reduce the number of mosquitoes and prevent the spread of diseases like malaria.

The public health push is essential, especially as the rainy season approaches when mosquito breeding is most prevalent. The AMC’s drive ensures that businesses comply with health regulations and contribute to a healthier environment for all residents.

As citizens of Ahmedabad, it is important to remain vigilant and cooperate with health officials in these efforts. Simple measures, such as keeping areas clean and free of stagnant water, can significantly reduce mosquito populations. Together, we can work towards a healthier and safer community, free from the threat of mosquito-borne diseases.
