Ahmedabad’s Vanishing Lakes: A Call for Urgent Action

Ahmedabad, a vibrant city in Gujarat, is facing a significant environmental challenge. Recent reports reveal that 37 out of 172 documented lakes in the city have disappeared. This alarming information comes from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and has caught the attention of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The disappearance of these lakes is largely attributed to rapid urban development and illegal encroachments. The NGT has issued notices to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), and the Ahmedabad District Collector, demanding detailed responses.

Many of Ahmedabad’s lakes, including Vastrapur, Memnagar, Thaltej, and Sola, have seen significant reductions in water area. In recent years, the area around these lakes has shrunk by nearly 46%. This situation raises serious concerns about the city’s water management and environmental planning.

During the last monsoon season, only 89 of the lakes managed to retain sufficient water. The decline in the water bodies is alarming, considering the importance of these lakes for local ecosystems and the community. Lakes play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity, providing recreational spaces, and supporting the local climate.

The NGT’s inquiry is prompted by a report published in The Indian Express, highlighting the urgent need for action. The report details how many of these lakes have been covered by housing developments and other infrastructures, such as water distribution centres run by AMC.

The AMC has acknowledged the situation and stated that efforts are underway to rejuvenate 142 lakes across the city. Plans are being made to install Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to ensure that rainwater and recycled water can fill these lakes. However, the effectiveness of these measures remains to be seen.

The problem is not just about the absence of water bodies. It reflects a broader issue of urban planning and environmental management. The NGT is emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to protect these water bodies from further encroachment. It is crucial that future urban development plans take into account the preservation of lakes and other natural resources.

Local residents and environmental activists have also raised their voices against the rapid loss of these lakes. They argue that the disappearance of water bodies not only affects the environment but also impacts the quality of life for residents. The lakes are essential for cooling the city and providing a natural habitat for various species.

As the case moves forward, all eyes are on the AMC and other authorities to see how seriously they take the NGT’s directives. The upcoming hearings will be crucial in determining the future of Ahmedabad’s lakes and the city’s commitment to sustainable urban development.

In summary, the situation of Ahmedabad’s lakes is a clear call for action. With urbanisation on the rise, it is essential to strike a balance between development and environmental conservation. The city must work towards ensuring that its rich water heritage is preserved for future generations. The fate of these lakes not only reflects the city’s environmental health but also its dedication to sustainable living and community well-being.
