A potential disaster was averted on Monday morning when an Air India flight skidded off the runway during landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The incident occurred around 9:27 am as the flight arrived from Kochi amid heavy rain in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra.
The flight, AI2744, faced challenging weather conditions during its landing. After touching down, the aircraft veered off the runway but was able to taxi safely to the gate. Thankfully, all passengers and crew members were reported safe. Emergency response teams at the airport quickly responded to the situation.
An Air India spokesperson said, “Flight AI2744, operating from Kochi to Mumbai on July 21, experienced heavy rain during landing, resulting in a runway excursion. The aircraft was safely taxied to the gate, and all passengers and crew disembarked safely. The aircraft has been grounded for thorough inspection.”
The airport also confirmed the incident and praised the swift actions of their emergency teams. According to a statement from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, “An incoming aircraft from Kochi experienced a runway excursion at 09:27 hours. All onboard are safe.”
The primary runway (09/27) sustained minor damage during the incident, but to ensure smooth operations, the airport authorities activated the secondary runway (14/32) for all arrivals and departures. The exact number of passengers on board has not been disclosed yet, but investigations and safety inspections are currently underway.
This incident comes shortly after the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Mumbai due to heavy rains. The alert warned of very heavy rainfall, which led to delays and increased safety precautions across the city’s air traffic operations.
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, the pilots managed to regain control of the aircraft, and no injuries were reported. The safety of passengers and crew remains a priority for the airline. Following the incident, a team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is assessing the situation to ensure that safety measures are in place, especially with more rain expected in the coming days.
The swift response and effective management at the airport helped prevent a major catastrophe. Passengers were advised to check their flight status with airlines and to allow extra time to reach the airport due to the ongoing weather conditions. This incident highlights the importance of safety measures in aviation, especially in adverse weather conditions.
As the monsoon season continues, authorities are keen to implement more safety protocols to avoid similar occurrences in the future. The quick thinking of the pilots and the emergency teams at CSMIA has undoubtedly made a difference in this situation, demonstrating the need for preparedness in aviation operations during challenging weather.
