The government of Gujarat has approved a proposal to rename Anand Municipality as “Karamsad-Anand Municipal Corporation.” This decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar. The spokesperson for the cabinet, Rishikesh Patel, confirmed this news.
The change comes as an effort to honour the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who was born in Karamsad. Many local leaders and residents have expressed the importance of maintaining the connection between Anand Municipality and Karamsad, given its historical significance.
This year, the Gujarat government has elevated nine municipalities to municipal corporation status. The newly upgraded municipalities include Navsari, Gandhidham, Morbi, Vapi, Anand, Mehsana, Surendranagar-Dudhrej-Vadhwan, Nadiad, and Porbandar-Chhaya.
The proposal to rename Anand Municipality came after various representations from local legislators, members of parliament, and community organizations. They emphasized the need to preserve the identity of Karamsad, which is also the birthplace of Sardar Patel.
The cabinet’s decision to rename Anand Municipality aims to keep the historical heritage of Karamsad intact. The government plans to officially announce the new name, Karamsad-Anand Municipal Corporation, by January 1, 2025. This will include not just Anand but also Karamsad and Vallabh Vidyanagar municipalities, along with nearby villages.
Despite the support for the name change, there has been some opposition from residents of Karamsad. Some locals have protested against their village being included in the municipality, arguing that it would dilute their identity. They have been vocal about their concerns, stating that their historical roots and identity should not be overshadowed by the larger Anand Municipality.
In recent weeks, tensions have risen as local leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pushed for the name change. This push came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Anand for various events, reminding local leaders of their ties to Sardar Patel.
The internal dynamics within the BJP have also surfaced, with some leaders feeling that the renaming is a way to gain political mileage. There are concerns that this move may lead to a divide among local leaders, as some feel sidelined in the decision-making process.
The community continues to debate the implications of this change. Some residents fear that merging Karamsad with Anand may lead to their unique culture being lost. They have vowed to keep fighting for Karamsad’s independence and identity.
As the state prepares for the official announcement, discussions around the renaming are expected to continue. Local leaders are keen to ensure that the historic significance of Karamsad is acknowledged while also promoting development in the region.
In conclusion, the decision to rename Anand Municipality to include Karamsad has sparked discussions and debates among local residents and leaders. While it aims to honour Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s legacy, it also raises questions about identity and representation in the evolving urban landscape of Gujarat.
