Anganwadi Workers in Patan Demand Solutions to Long-Standing Issues

In Patan, Gujarat, the Indian Anganwadi Workers Federation submitted a memorandum to the district panchayat on Friday. This document addresses the urgent issues faced by Anganwadi workers, known locally as ‘sisters’. The federation expressed frustration that, despite numerous representations made to officials at all levels of government over the past two years, no solutions have been found.

The memorandum highlighted that a decision was made during the Indian Labour Union’s Gujarat committee meeting, which took place on July 12-13, 2025. According to this decision, Anganwadi workers from all over Gujarat will stage a protest in Gandhinagar to demand resolutions for their problems.

This protest, termed ‘Satyagraha’, is scheduled for August 4, 2025, from 12 PM to 4 PM. During this time, a rally and public meeting will also be organised. Anganwadi workers have repeatedly sought help from the government, but they have only received reassurances without any concrete results.

The federation included various issues concerning Anganwadi workers in their memorandum and insisted on finding solutions for these problems. The workers plan to unite and raise their voices during this upcoming Satyagraha to fight for their rights.

Patan is a city located on the banks of the Saraswati River and is a witness to Gujarat’s golden age. It is the headquarters of Patan district and a significant historical site. After Gujarat received its name, Patan became the first capital of the state. This city served as the capital of Gujarat for more than 650 years until the 14th century. It was known for its wealth, commerce, and cultural richness, competing with cities renowned for their prosperity and intellect.

The city is named after Anahil, a childhood friend of the founder of the Gujarat empire, Vanraj Chavda. According to tradition, the city was established on March 28, 746 AD, when Vanraj Chavda laid its foundation. Patan was once the capital during the rule of the Solanki dynasty and is celebrated for its historical significance.

Today, Patan is famous for its ‘Rani Ki Vav’, an ancient stepwell built in 1063 AD in memory of Queen Udaymati. This site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, showcasing the architectural brilliance of its time.

Despite its rich history and culture, the current challenges faced by Anganwadi workers reflect a broader issue in society. Anganwadi workers play a vital role in child education and nutrition in rural areas. Their demands for better wages and working conditions are essential not only for their livelihoods but also for the health and education of future generations.

As the Satyagraha approaches, the federation is calling on all Anganwadi workers to come together and stand up for their rights. Their efforts aim to highlight the importance of their work and the need for the government to address their concerns effectively. The community is watching closely as these dedicated workers seek justice and recognition for their invaluable contributions.
