The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has made an important change in the school curriculum. Chapters from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita have now been added to first language textbooks for Classes 9 to 12. This is a significant move as it applies to textbooks in various languages, including Gujarati, Hindi, English, and Urdu.

Earlier, the Gujarat government decided to integrate the Bhagavad Gita into the education system at all levels, from primary to higher secondary. Following this initiative, students began to learn selected Gita chapters along with traditional Sanskrit shlokas. Last year, the Gujarati textbooks were updated with two new chapters from the Gita. However, the other language textbooks were not ready at that time, which meant that exam questions based on the Gita could not be included for those languages.

Now, with the recent release of updated textbooks in all four languages, the GSHSEB has also introduced revised exam paper formats. This change will take effect starting from the academic year 2025-26.

A circular was issued to all District Education Officers (DEOs) instructing schools to adopt the new textbooks and exam formats. The board has emphasized that these changes are necessary to keep the curriculum aligned with the updated educational directives.

The revised exam formats were proposed by subject experts and received approval during an academic committee meeting on July 17. This meeting focused on how to effectively incorporate the Gita into the syllabus. Monthly planning for syllabus coverage and the implementation of the new formats has already started.

The Bhagavad Gita is a revered text in Hindu philosophy, often referred to as a guide to living a righteous life. It presents a dialogue between Prince Arjuna and Lord Krishna, discussing key concepts like duty, action, and devotion. By including these chapters in school textbooks, the Gujarat government aims to promote moral and ethical education among students.

This initiative has been met with enthusiasm from many educators and parents. They believe that understanding the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita can help students navigate challenges and make better decisions in their lives.

The impact of this curriculum change extends beyond academics. It also aims to instill values of discipline, respect, and responsibility among students, qualities that are essential for personal development and societal harmony.

In conclusion, the integration of the Bhagavad Gita into school textbooks marks a significant step in Gujarat’s educational reforms. It reflects a commitment to enriching students’ learning experiences and fostering a deeper understanding of their cultural heritage. As students engage with these teachings, they will likely gain valuable insights that will guide them in their future endeavors, both academically and personally.
