Bridge Closure in Ahmedabad Due to Deterioration

In Ahmedabad, a bridge over the Kharicut Canal has been closed due to its poor condition. This bridge connects Ramol Chokdi to Vatva GIDC and has been in use for over 50 years. Due to its age and deterioration, the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner has issued a notification restricting heavy and medium vehicles from using the bridge. This decision comes after an inspection by experts from the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) which deemed the bridge unsafe for heavy traffic.

Starting immediately, vehicles traveling from Ramol Chokdi to Kharicut Canal and those coming from GIDC Ambika Triangle will not be able to cross this bridge. The police have provided alternative routes for drivers.

For vehicles heading towards Vatva GIDC, they can now take a route through Trikampura Chokdi, turn right, and then proceed towards Hathi Jan (Red GEB Circle). Vehicles coming from GIDC can also take a left turn at Trikampura Chokdi to reach their destination safely.

However, certain vehicles will be exempt from this restriction. Emergency services such as government vehicles, fire brigades, and ambulances can still use the bridge in urgent situations. The police have warned that those who violate this notification will face penalties under the Indian Penal Code and the Gujarat Police Act.

This closure is part of a broader move by the Ahmedabad authorities to ensure public safety following a recent incident where a bridge in Anand collapsed, resulting in the loss of 20 lives. In response, the state government has ordered inspections of all bridges in the area. Currently, there are 97 bridges across Gujarat where vehicle traffic has been halted. Additionally, 39 bridges are in such poor condition that they may collapse at any moment.

The government has stated that out of 364 bridges in the Ahmedabad region, 231 are in good condition. However, concerns remain about the safety of the older structures.

The Kharicut Canal has a long history, initially constructed during British rule in 1881. It has faced various challenges over the years, including pollution and poor maintenance. The Gujarat government has announced plans to renovate the canal at a cost of 1,200 crores to improve the area surrounding it. This renovation aims to enhance the living conditions for residents and prevent flooding issues during monsoon seasons.

In conclusion, while the closure of the Kharicut Canal bridge may cause inconvenience to drivers, it is a necessary measure to ensure public safety. With alternative routes available, commuters are advised to plan their travel accordingly and stay updated on any further developments regarding the bridge’s condition and future renovations.
