Bridge Collapse in Vadodara: Officials Suspended After Tragedy

A serious accident occurred on Wednesday in central Gujarat, where a significant section of the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge collapsed. This bridge connects the districts of Anand and Vadodara and is vital for traffic between the two areas. Reports indicate that several vehicles fell into the river, leading to the tragic loss of life. Local authorities have confirmed that at least 11 people have died due to this incident.

The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, has taken immediate action following the preliminary investigation. Four officials from the Roads and Buildings Department have been suspended due to their negligence. This includes one executive engineer and two assistant executive engineers.

The Chief Minister has ordered a thorough and detailed investigation to determine the cause of the bridge collapse. Since the news broke, he has been in constant contact with the Roads and Buildings Department and district collectors to guide rescue operations.

A team of experts has been assigned to report on the maintenance, inspection, and quality checks conducted on the bridge over the years. The preliminary findings have pointed to negligence by the officials involved in the bridge’s upkeep.

The incident took place when a significant part of the bridge between two pillars suddenly broke, causing multiple vehicles, including two trucks and an eco van, to plunge into the river. Rescue teams, including the local fire department and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been deployed to the site to assist in the rescue operations.

According to Anil Dhameliya, the District Collector of Vadodara, five individuals have been rescued with minor injuries, while the tragic news of 11 confirmed fatalities has left the community in shock. He stated, “We have rescued five people with minor injuries, but we have confirmed two deaths. We are continuing our rescue efforts.”

Rescue operations have been complicated due to the depth of the river, but teams are working tirelessly. The bridge, which was repaired last year, has now raised concerns about the safety of other bridges in the state. The Chief Minister has instructed a comprehensive re-evaluation of other bridges to ensure public safety.

Local residents and officials are calling for immediate action to prevent such tragedies in the future. The bridge collapse has severely impacted traffic between Anand and Vadodara, affecting thousands of commuters daily. Many are now urging the government to enhance maintenance protocols and ensure that such critical infrastructure is safe and reliable.

Congress MLA Amit Chavda expressed his concerns on social media, emphasizing the need for prompt government action to manage the situation and redirect traffic effectively. As investigations continue, the focus remains on providing support to the victims’ families and ensuring that those responsible for the tragedy are held accountable.

In summary, the collapse of the Mujpur-Gambhira bridge has not only resulted in tragic loss of life but has also raised significant questions regarding infrastructure safety in Gujarat. The government’s swift response and subsequent investigations will be crucial in addressing these pressing issues.
