Bridges on Vehlal Canal Closed for Safety in Ahmedabad

In Ahmedabad, two bridges on the Vehlal canal will be closed for traffic due to safety concerns. The decision comes after an inspection revealed critical conditions. The Executive Engineer from Sardar Sarovar, Narmada Corporation Ltd. announced the closure on July 16, 2025. The bridges in question are located on the Vehlal branch canal, affecting the local transport system. The closure is to ensure the safety of commuters and prevent accidents. As a result, drivers will need to use alternative routes during this period.

The first bridge, numbered 10197, is situated about 100 meters from the Ahmedabad-Indore Highway. This bridge connects Kothiya village to Kuha village. Vehicles can use the Kothiya-Kuha route as an alternative during the closure. The second bridge, numbered 20322, is located near the village of Dhamtavan. It serves as a route from Dhamtavan to Harniyav and will also be closed for repairs.

The local police have been informed to monitor the situation and ensure compliance with the closure. Drivers are advised to take the service road of the Narmada main canal to avoid delays. This road will help those traveling towards Apurji from Dodiakui village and vice versa.

This decision is part of a larger effort in Gujarat to inspect and maintain bridges across the state. Recent checks have resulted in the closure of several bridges due to their deteriorating conditions. In Gandhinagar district alone, seven bridges have been closed for heavy vehicles. Authorities continue to assess other structures to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.

The police will enforce the closure, and any violations of this order will be penalised under the Gujarat Police Act and the Indian Penal Code. The local administration has urged everyone to cooperate during this essential maintenance period. The closure will remain in effect until October 17, 2025, and all residents and commuters are strongly advised to follow the new traffic regulations during this time.

In the meantime, the government is working on a comprehensive plan to inspect and repair bridges across the region. The safety of the public is paramount, and these measures are necessary to prevent any future incidents. Authorities are committed to restoring normal traffic flow as quickly as possible while ensuring the bridges are safe for use once they reopen.
