Celebrating International Chess Day in Gujarat

July 20 is a special day for chess lovers around the world. It is known as International Chess Day. This day is celebrated to honour the game of chess and the founding of FIDE, the International Chess Federation, in 1924. In Gujarat, this year, the Faculty of Business Administration (FOBA) and Faculty of Commerce (FOC) at GLS University organized exciting chess tournaments to mark this occasion.

FOBA held an inter-class chess tournament for BBA students. Over 100 students participated, showcasing their skills on the chessboard. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as students competed for the title. This tournament was a great way for students to engage in a fun and intellectual challenge.

Meanwhile, FOC collaborated with the Chess New District Association to host a separate tournament. This event had 96 students showcasing their strategic thinking and competitive spirit. The chess matches drew a crowd of enthusiastic spectators, cheering for their peers as they made their moves.

International Chess Day is not just a celebration; it raises awareness about the game’s impact on education and social inclusion. The day was first recognized officially by the United Nations in 2019. It emphasizes the importance of chess in promoting peace, understanding, and cooperation across cultures and communities.

In 2025, the theme for International Chess Day is “Every Move Counts”. This theme reminds us that every decision we make, both in chess and in life, shapes our journey. FIDE has highlighted the importance of using chess as a tool for education and empowerment, especially for women and girls. This aligns with their initiative called the ‘Year of Social Chess’, which aims to use the game to foster inclusion and support mental well-being.

The celebration of chess in Gujarat reflects a larger global trend. Countries around the world are recognizing chess as more than a game; it is a way to teach valuable life skills such as critical thinking, patience, and respect. Armenia has led efforts to integrate chess into school curriculums, making it a mandatory subject. This has resulted in a high number of elite chess players emerging from the country.

As part of the celebrations, chess enthusiasts are encouraged to share their experiences and stories on social media using the hashtag #InternationalChessDay. This fosters a sense of community and allows people to connect over their love for the game.

In Gujarat, the excitement surrounding chess is growing. Schools and universities are increasingly organizing chess tournaments, workshops, and events to engage students and promote the game. The spirit of competition and camaraderie among players is creating a vibrant chess culture.

For those interested in getting involved, teaching someone to play chess is one of the simplest ways to celebrate International Chess Day. Whether it is a friend, a sibling, or a colleague, sharing the joy of chess can spark a lifelong interest in the game.

As we celebrate International Chess Day, let us appreciate the game for its ability to connect people across boundaries. Chess teaches us important lessons about respect, fairness, and strategy. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned player, every game played on this day contributes to the global chess community.

Join in the celebrations next year and be a part of the global chess movement. Together, we can promote the game of chess and its many benefits to individuals and society as a whole. Happy International Chess Day!
