A controversy has arisen at Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University in Patan regarding admissions to the MPED (Master of Physical Education) course. On Tuesday, students gathered at the Chancellor’s office to submit a petition. They expressed their concerns about the admission policy. According to the students, 90% of the seats should be reserved for local students, while 10% are for students from outside the university. However, the current admission list shows a violation of this rule, with 90% of the seats filled by outside students and only 10% by local candidates.
This situation has left around 40 local students without admission. The university registrar, Dr Rohitbhai Desai, acknowledged the students’ concerns and accepted their petition. He admitted that there were errors in the admission list. He informed the students that a new provisional merit list would be prepared, ensuring compliance with the 90:10 ratio.
Moreover, Dr Desai assured the students that if there are more applicants, they will request the council to increase the current 40 seats by 40%. He mentioned that discussions are underway with the department’s dean and the physical director. The university aims to resolve this issue promptly.
The university, established in 1986, has faced challenges in recent years. Despite being a state university accredited by NAAC, it has been under scrutiny for various issues, including its infrastructure and the quality of education. This recent admission controversy highlights ongoing concerns about the fairness and transparency of the admission process.
Patan University plays a vital role in the education sector of North Gujarat. It serves students from several districts, offering various academic programs. However, incidents like this raise questions about the management and policies of educational institutions in the region.
In response to the uproar, university officials have promised to take corrective measures. They aim to ensure that all students are treated fairly and that the admission process adheres to established guidelines. The situation is a reminder of the importance of transparency in educational admissions, which can significantly impact students’ futures.
As the university prepares to release a new merit list, students remain hopeful. They trust that their voices will be heard and that the institution will uphold its commitment to local candidates. This incident serves as a wake-up call for universities to review their policies and practices, ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to succeed in their educational pursuits.
