The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is facing serious accusations of corruption. Reports claim that the Publicity Department has made payments worth crores of rupees to disqualified companies. Despite these companies being barred from work, they received significant payments. This raises questions about transparency and accountability within the AMC.

The Publicity Department has a questionable track record. It has often been accused of failing in its primary duties while excelling in corruption. This latest incident highlights a worrying trend. It appears that contracts are awarded to certain firms, even after they have been disqualified from the tender process.

In a recent case, a company from Surat that was disqualified received payments totaling over Rs. 2.31 crore. The AMC was aware of the situation but still processed payments. Astonishingly, while records indicate that bills were paid, several of these bills are now missing from the official files. This raises concerns about how financial records are maintained within the department.

From April 1, 2017, to March 28, 2018, payments amounting to Rs. 6.75 crore were made by the Publicity Department. Some of these payments included Rs. 5.16 lakh to Vishal Decor Pvt Ltd and Rs. 13 lakh for the Kakariya Carnival. However, these bills too have reportedly vanished from the department’s records.

The pattern of irregularities continues in other areas as well. In tenders for hoardings and flex printing, a company named Balaji Vehicles was given a deadline extension contrary to the tender conditions. Additionally, payments totaling Rs. 91.75 lakh were made, but no copies of any bills are available on record. This lack of documentation is alarming.

Moreover, payments worth Rs. 38 crore were made to Vishal Decor and Event Pvt Ltd for mandap decoration, yet there is no explanation or record for these payments either. This situation highlights a severe lack of oversight in the AMC’s financial dealings.

The AMC was established under the Bombay Provincial Corporation Act in July 1950. It is responsible for managing the city’s infrastructure and providing essential services. However, the recent findings suggest a need for substantial reform and scrutiny within the organisation.

Citizens of Ahmedabad deserve a transparent and accountable municipal corporation. The current allegations of corruption must be investigated thoroughly to restore public trust. The AMC should take immediate steps to audit its financial transactions and ensure that such irregularities do not happen in the future. Only then can it truly serve the people of Ahmedabad effectively and restore its reputation as a reliable public service provider.
