In Ahmedabad, a tragic plane crash occurred on June 12, involving an Air India flight. Two months later, the families of the victims have still not received any compensation. Mike Andrews, an American attorney representing the victims, expressed deep concern over the delay. He stated that if Ratan Tata were alive, the victims would not face such struggles.
During a media interaction, Andrews emphasized that Ratan Tata was known for his promptness in addressing such matters. The attorney highlighted the pain of the families, especially a grieving elderly mother who relied on her son for health care. With her son deceased and no compensation received, the family is left in despair.
Air India announced a compensation package of one crore rupees for each victim’s family shortly after the crash. They later added an additional 25 lakh rupees. On July 26, Air India revealed that they had disbursed 26 lakh rupees to 147 families of the 229 passengers on board. However, many victims’ families have yet to receive the promised one crore rupees.
The Air India flight crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, heading to London. It crashed into a medical college hostel, resulting in the deaths of 241 individuals, including 12 crew members. Only one passenger survived the disaster. Nineteen others also lost their lives in related incidents.
The crash has raised serious questions about aviation safety in India. Experts suggest that most accidents occur during takeoff and landing. In 2023, there have been 109 plane crashes worldwide, with 37 occurring during takeoff.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia regarding the incident. Rescue operations involved the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local fire brigades. An investigation into the crash is underway, with initial reports suggesting technical issues with the flight’s engines.
Historically, India has faced numerous aviation disasters, often caused by technical failures or human error. In light of this recent tragedy, there is an urgent need for improved safety measures in the aviation sector to prevent such incidents in the future. The families of the victims continue to seek justice and timely compensation for their unimaginable losses.
