In Disa, a group of concerned citizens has taken a stand against corruption in their local municipality. Recently, they visited the Deputy Collector to present their concerns. They formed an organisation called ‘Shan Tiranga’ and are ready to fight legally. This follows the recent investigation into a garbage scam in the Disa Municipality. A team of four members has been set up by the Banaskantha District Collector to conduct this investigation.
During their meeting with the Deputy Collector, the citizens highlighted the ongoing corruption and demanded a thorough investigation into the garbage scam. They raised questions about a beautification project that cost 6.25 lakh INR. The citizens believe this project is a misuse of funds, especially since many CCTV cameras installed for public safety are non-functional. They pointed out that the municipality has been ignoring safety measures, leaving residents vulnerable.
The municipality often completes general board calculations in minutes and passes over 100 resolutions at once. This rapid process raises concerns about transparency and adherence to rules. The citizens voiced their frustration over the municipality’s way of handling matters. They accused the local government of acting without accountability.
The citizens are particularly worried about the lack of effective CCTV surveillance in the city. They stated that the CCTV cameras installed by the municipality have become mere decorations, as they do not work properly. The citizens insisted that functioning CCTV cameras are essential for the safety of Disa’s residents.
If the municipality fails to address these issues, the citizens warned of a hunger strike outside the municipality office. They are also considering filing a petition in the High Court to seek justice. The citizens believe that strong action must be taken to stop the corruption and ensure accountability in local governance.
This citizen initiative reflects a growing awareness and readiness to challenge corruption in local government. The Disa community is determined to ensure their voices are heard and their demands met. As the investigation unfolds, many are watching closely to see if the municipality will take the necessary steps to address these serious concerns.
