DSP Mutual Fund has launched an innovative investment option called the DSP Nifty500 Flexicap Quality 30 Index Fund. This fund is the first of its kind in India, focusing on quality stocks and dynamic market capitalisation. It aims to help investors manage their investments in the ever-changing equity markets. The fund is designed to be low-cost, making it accessible to a wide range of investors.
The DSP Nifty500 Flexicap Quality 30 Index Fund will track the Nifty500 Flexicap Quality 30 Index. This index includes 30 high-quality companies from various market segments: large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap. Each segment will have an equal weight of 10 companies. The selection of these companies is based on strict criteria such as high return on equity, low levels of debt, and strong earnings growth.
DSP Mutual Fund advises investors to consider the Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) route when investing in this fund. This is because market valuations, particularly for quality small and mid-cap stocks, can be unpredictable. SIPs allow investors to average their purchase costs over time. This strategy helps reduce the risk of investing at a peak in the market, aligning with the fund’s philosophy of disciplined, long-term investment.
One of the key features of this fund is its dynamic allocation strategy. The fund uses a flexicap momentum approach to adjust investments between large, mid, and small-cap stocks. The allocation is based on a clear, rule-based signal comparing the performance of small and mid-caps against large caps. This signal is analysed every quarter to decide the allocation between the three segments.
Since its inception, the Nifty500 Flexicap Quality 30 Index has achieved an impressive Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 18.1% from October 2009 to now. This is significantly higher than the Nifty 500 Total Return Index, which achieved a CAGR of 13.0% during the same period. The index has shown resilience during market volatility, focusing on quality stocks. Over rolling 5-year investment periods, it has delivered a median return of 20.3%, compared to 15.8% from the Nifty 500 TRI.
The fund’s design aims to simplify the investment process. Investors do not have to constantly monitor their investments or switch between different funds. This passive structure allows for rebalancing without incurring taxes or exit loads, which is often a concern with actively managed funds.
Kalpen Parekh, the Managing Director and CEO of DSP Mutual Fund, stated, “Two conditions are important for investors to achieve compounding – investing in high-quality businesses at reasonable valuations. We believe in launching funds when strategies are undervalued.” He emphasised that the current market correction in quality stocks makes this an ideal time for launching this fund.
According to Anil Ghelani, Head of Passive Investments and Products at DSP Mutual Fund, the DSP Nifty500 Flexicap Quality 30 Index Fund combines dynamic allocation with high-quality stock selection. This transparent, rules-based approach aims to reduce complexity and help investors participate effectively across market cycles.
Sahil Kapoor, Market Strategist and Head of Products, also noted that many investors have trouble with market timing and allocation decisions. This fund addresses these challenges by using a smart combination of momentum-based rebalancing and quality filters, offering both agility and resilience.
