The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has made significant seizures in a recent case involving foreign exchange violations. The agency confiscated luxury cars, expensive watches, cash, and gold during their investigations. This action is part of a broader crackdown on illegal forex activities linked to traders Mahendra Shah and his son, Megh Shah, based in Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
In the latest raid, conducted over two days, the ED seized four luxury cars, including a Bentley Continental GT and a BMW X6M. The total value of the seized items amounts to ₹1.5 crore. In addition to the cars, officials recovered ₹15 lakh in cash and luxury watches from renowned brands like Rolex and Cartier. The operation focused on properties associated with the Shahs, following previous investigations by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS).
Earlier this month, the DRI and ATS uncovered 88 kilograms of gold suspected to be smuggled into India. This gold, valued at approximately ₹80 crore, was found in a flat owned by Megh Shah. The operation highlighted the increasing scrutiny on gold smuggling activities in the region, especially after a recent high-profile arrest involving a Kannada actor at Bengaluru airport for carrying a large amount of gold.
The raids were initiated based on intelligence received by the Gujarat ATS. They pinpointed the location of the Shahs’ flat and conducted a thorough search. During this operation, they not only found the gold but also discovered jewellery weighing nearly 20 kilograms adorned with diamonds and precious metals.
The ED’s actions are part of ongoing efforts to enforce the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). This legal framework is designed to regulate foreign exchange transactions and prevent illegal currency dealings. The agency’s involvement follows earlier raids in April, where ₹23 lakh in cash was seized in relation to this case.
The investigation into Mahendra and Megh Shah has raised concerns about the scale of forex violations and gold smuggling in India. Authorities are determined to tackle these illegal activities, which pose significant challenges to the economy and national security. With these recent seizures, the ED aims to send a strong message to those involved in similar unlawful practices.
As the investigation continues, the ED will likely pursue further leads and connections to uncover the full extent of these operations. The public and government officials are watching closely, as these developments could impact the future of forex regulations and enforcement in the country.
