In a heartwarming event, a mentally unstable woman named Sitaben, approximately 50 years old, was reunited with her family after being in a women’s protection centre in Palanpur for over three and a half years. The Palanpur Women’s Protection Centre, which is managed by the District Women and Child Officer’s office, played a crucial role in this emotional reunion.

Sitaben was first transferred to the Palanpur centre from a shelter home in Patan. During her stay, she was unable to provide any information about her address or family. However, the dedicated team at the centre provided ongoing mental health treatment and counselling, which helped improve her condition. Thanks to the efforts of manager Nilofarben and treatment at Palanpur Civil Hospital, Sitaben was able to recall her maternal home, which is located in Kathana village in Anand district.

The local sarpanch (village head) and elders helped gather information about her family. They discovered that Sitaben’s maternal relatives no longer lived in the village. However, with further investigation, the team managed to contact her in-laws and facilitated a conversation with her husband. After confirming her identity, an emotional video call took place between Sitaben and her husband. It was revealed that a police complaint had been filed by her family when she went missing.

After verifying her identity through her Aadhaar card and obtaining approval from District Collector Mihir Patel, Sitaben was finally reunited with her husband. This reunion was filled with tears of joy, as family members expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Banaskantha District Collector, the staff at the women’s centre, and the manager.

The women’s protection centre provides shelter to women aged between 18 and 59 who have been victims of various forms of abuse, orphaned, disabled, or affected by human trafficking. The centre offers continuous support for their mental, educational, and economic rehabilitation.

This touching reunion highlights the importance of mental health care and the efforts of organisations like the women’s protection centre in Gujarat. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of families when faced with difficult circumstances. The community’s involvement played a vital role in bringing Sitaben back to her loved ones, showcasing the power of unity and support in times of need. The emotional scenes during the reunion left a lasting impression on everyone present, demonstrating the deep bond between family members, even after years of separation.

As Sitaben embarks on her journey back to normalcy with the support of her family, the story serves as an inspiration for many who may be struggling with mental health issues. It emphasizes the need for continued support and understanding for individuals facing such challenges, ensuring they can find their way back to their families and communities.
