Farmers in Banaskantha, Gujarat, are actively participating in a groundwater enrichment initiative as part of India’s ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this campaign aims to conserve water and raise groundwater levels. The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, initiated the ‘Water Conservation Public Participation’ approach from the town of Dantiwada. Recently, the region received an average of 40 mm of rainfall within 72 hours. Farmers have successfully used recharge wells to channel this rainwater into the ground.
District Collector Mihir Patel explained that the recharge well initiative is ongoing under the guidance of the Prime Minister. This project aims to collect rainwater and increase the groundwater table. So far, over 22,000 recharge wells have been created across 14 talukas in Banaskantha, thanks to the cooperation of local communities and Banaskantha Dairy.
Before this initiative, farmers often saw rainwater wash away from their fields. However, with the new recharge wells, they can now capture and store this water. Mihir Patel urged all farmers to implement methods such as farm ponds and recharge wells to retain rainwater in their fields. The goal is to work together to enhance the groundwater levels in Banaskantha.
One farmer from Dhanehri village, Ishwarbhai Chaudhary, shared his experience. He built a recharge well measuring 4×6 feet. Previously, his field would retain rainwater for three weeks, but now it sinks into the ground within 24 hours. He believes the ‘Catch the Rain’ initiative is a blessing for farmers, promising to improve groundwater levels and farmer welfare.
Another farmer, Hathibhai Patel, echoed similar sentiments. He constructed a recharge well on his farm and successfully directed all rainwater into the ground this year. Despite receiving 6 to 7 inches of rain within 24 hours, all the water was absorbed. He appreciates the government’s efforts and believes this initiative will benefit local farmers by raising groundwater levels.
The Prime Minister’s directive of ‘Keeping water from the field in the field, and water from the village in the village’ aims to capture as much rainwater as possible and raise the groundwater table. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Water Minister C.R. Patil, and Assembly Speaker Shankarbhai Chaudhary, a campaign to create 50,000 recharge wells is underway in Banaskantha.
This initiative is part of a broader national effort launched by the Prime Minister in 2019 to enhance groundwater levels across India through public participation. The campaign encourages communities to work together to conserve water resources effectively.
In conclusion, the efforts of the farmers in Banaskantha represent a significant step towards sustainable water management in the region. By capturing rainwater through recharge wells, they are not only enhancing their farming conditions but also contributing to the larger goal of groundwater conservation. As more farmers join this initiative, Banaskantha could set an example for other regions in India facing similar challenges with water scarcity and groundwater depletion.
