In a powerful address at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Lucknow, Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, shared his insights on leadership and entrepreneurship. He emphasised that the future belongs to those who take risks rather than play it safe. Adani’s journey from a young entrepreneur in Ahmedabad to a global business leader serves as a testament to this philosophy.
Adani began his speech by recognising the privilege of speaking at such a prestigious institution. He told students that they represent the best of India’s young talent. He noted that they have a responsibility to become the architects of a new India. He encouraged them to trust their instincts, especially when data is not available. He said, “Courage, not corporations, will save the future.” This statement resonated well with the audience, as many young minds are eager to innovate and make their mark.
One of the key messages of his address was about the importance of struggle in achieving success. Adani stated, “Anything worthwhile will test you.” He reflected on his own challenges, recalling times when he felt he had little support. Yet, he maintained a strong belief in his dreams. Adani’s entrepreneurial journey began at age 16 when he moved to Mumbai to work in the diamond trading business. This experience taught him about risk and the importance of building relationships.
He shared stories about pivotal moments in his career, including the establishment of Mundra Port. When he proposed building the port, many doubted him, as it was located in a marshland. However, Adani believed in the potential of Mundra, stating, “I was asking them to fund a possibility no one had explored.” Today, Mundra Port stands as India’s largest commercial port, a symbol of his vision and tenacity.
Adani also discussed his ambitious renewable energy project at Khavda in Gujarat. He aims to build the world’s largest renewable energy park, generating significant green power. Despite the challenges of constructing in a desert, he remains committed to this vision. He believes that creativity and bold ideas can turn impossible dreams into reality.
Another significant project he mentioned was the Carmichael coal mine in Australia. This venture faced severe environmental opposition, yet Adani stood firm. He highlighted the importance of energy independence for India and his resolve to overcome global resistance. He noted, “Our project powers industries and supports thousands of livelihoods.”
Adani’s vision extends beyond business; he is committed to social responsibility. He spoke about plans to redevelop Dharavi, a well-known slum in Mumbai. He stressed that this project is about dignity and respect for people who have contributed to the city’s growth but have not reaped its benefits. He stated, “No nation can rise when so many live without dignity.”
In closing, Adani urged students to embrace their potential and dream big. He believes that India will emerge as a major global economic power by 2050. He attributed this to four essential forces: a young workforce, growing demand, strong digital infrastructure, and domestic investment in innovation.
His final words to the students were motivational: “Go. Build. Lead. Roar. India is calling you.” Adani’s speech left a lasting impression, inspiring the audience to take bold steps in their careers and contribute to India’s bright future.
