The Prime Minister Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has made significant strides in Gujarat. Over 1.94 crore bank accounts have been opened under this scheme. This has brought banking facilities to both urban and rural citizens. The goal is to ensure that every citizen has access to essential banking services.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the PM Jan Dhan Yojana aims to provide zero-balance accounts. This means that people can open accounts without needing to maintain a minimum balance. This initiative supports various financial services, including life insurance and pension schemes.
The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It focuses on providing universal banking services across the country. In Gujarat, the state government has worked hard to link citizens with banking facilities. This has been especially beneficial in rural areas, where access to banks can be limited.
To enhance this effort, the central government has initiated a special campaign called the ‘Jan Suraksha Santrupti Abhiyan’. This campaign runs from July 1 to September 30, 2025. It aims to promote financial inclusion and social security across India, including Gujarat. The campaign offers various banking, insurance, and pension schemes at very low costs.
The government has made sure that services reach every corner of the state. This includes all 14,610 gram panchayats and urban local bodies. The responsibility for assisting citizens has been given to trained village computer entrepreneurs (VCEs). They help people open accounts and register for necessary services.
The PMJDY allows Indian citizens aged ten and above who do not have any bank account to open one. The bank account is a basic savings bank deposit account. It does not require any minimum balance. Each account holder receives a RuPay debit card. This card can be used for various transactions, including online purchases.
Furthermore, account holders benefit from accident insurance coverage. If they use their RuPay card at least once within 90 days, they are eligible for insurance of up to ₹2 lakh. After six months of satisfactory management of their account, they can also access an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000.
In addition to these benefits, the PMJDY accounts allow for direct benefit transfers. This means subsidies for LPG, pensions, and wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) can be deposited directly into their accounts. These facilities are crucial for ensuring that eligible citizens receive financial support without delay.
The launch of this initiative in Gujarat was a significant event. It took place on July 1, 2025, in the village of Pundhara, Gandhinagar district, and was inaugurated virtually by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in the presence of Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai.
The PMJDY aims to empower individuals by providing them with banking services. It has proven to be a successful initiative in Gujarat. The state government continues to promote financial literacy and inclusion, ensuring that every citizen can benefit from these schemes.
For more information about the PMJDY and how to open an account, citizens can visit the official website or contact their nearest bank branch or VCE. This effort marks a pivotal step toward achieving a financially inclusive India, where every citizen has access to banking and financial services.
