In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, the 166th anniversary of the Income Tax Department was celebrated with great enthusiasm. The event was marked by the presence of the Governor of Gujarat, Acharya Devvrat. He highlighted the significant role that the Income Tax Department plays in the economic development of India. According to him, the country is on its way to becoming the fourth largest economy in the world, aiming for a target of a $5 trillion economy. He emphasized that this progress is a result of the honesty of taxpayers and the dedication of the Income Tax Department. The Governor stated that every nation’s growth is rooted in its economy, and the contribution of the Income Tax Department is vital in this regard.
Governor Devvrat praised the relationship of mutual trust between taxpayers and the Income Tax Department. He stressed the need for a transparent tax process, one that fosters dialogue and empathy rather than fear. He mentioned how crucial it is for tax officials to consider how they would feel if they were in the taxpayer’s position. Furthermore, he pointed out that tax collection is not merely about revenue generation but also a means to promote social equity. The aim of taxation is to distribute resources fairly among the society, strengthening unity and brotherhood.
The event also showcased the digital advancements made by the Income Tax Department. The Governor noted that the current tax process is much simpler and more transparent than before. He highlighted progressive decisions such as tax exemptions for incomes up to ₹12 lakh, reflecting the government’s positive approach towards taxpayers.
Additionally, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax in Gujarat, Satish Sharma, spoke about the historic changes in the department. He noted that the Income Tax Department has transformed from a law enforcement agency to a service-oriented body. He pointed out that when he started in 1990, the department was entirely paper-based, but now it has become fully digital. Taxpayers no longer need to visit the office, as refunds can be processed within ten days, and assessments have become faceless.
Sharma also compared the previous tax rates, which used to be as high as 60%, to the current maximum rate of 30%. He mentioned that tax collections have skyrocketed from ₹10,000 crore in 1990 to over ₹22 lakh crore today, with this year’s target set at ₹25 lakh crore. This growth is attributed to the integrity of the taxpayers, the efficiency of the department, and the government’s taxpayer-friendly policies.
The event concluded with awards given to officials and employees who have excelled in their service to the Income Tax Department. The Governor also presented prizes to students who participated in various competitions aimed at creating awareness about taxation. Overall, the celebration underscored the importance of trust and transparency in tax administration, as well as the role of the Income Tax Department in driving economic progress in Gujarat and India as a whole.
