Gujarat Celebrates National Organ Donation Day with Remarkable Achievements

Ahmedabad: Organ donation is an important act that saves lives. In Gujarat, the spirit of organ donation is strong. This year, as we approach National Organ Donation Day on August 3, we reflect on the state’s achievements in this area. On August 1, the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad witnessed its 202nd organ donation. A father donated his brain-dead son’s organs, highlighting the commitment to saving lives even after death.

The story began when 45-year-old Dhirajbhai Shrimali was admitted to the Civil Hospital after suffering from a severe illness for 25 years. Doctors declared him brain-dead after 72 hours of intensive care. His family was then approached by the hospital’s organ donation team, who explained the benefits of organ donation. With a heavy heart, Dhirajbhai’s father, Ganpatbhai, agreed to donate his son’s organs, allowing his son to live on in others.

This act of kindness has already benefited many. Since the start of organ donation activities at the Civil Hospital, a total of 664 organs have been donated, saving 645 lives. The donations include 177 livers, 368 kidneys, and many other organs. This year’s National Organ Donation Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation.

Organ donation is not just a noble act; it has numerous benefits. It provides hope to those suffering from serious illnesses. For instance, those suffering from kidney failure or liver cirrhosis can receive a new lease on life through donated organs. Families find solace in knowing that their loved ones can help others live.

The Gujarat government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, has been proactive in promoting organ donation. The state has received three prestigious awards for excellence in organ donation initiatives. This includes the award for ‘Excellence in Promotion of Organ Donation’ awarded to the Gujarat government.

The New Surat Civil Hospital has been recognised as the ‘Best Non-Transplant Organ Retrieval Centre’. Additionally, the Kidney Institute in Ahmedabad has been named the ‘Best Transplant Hospital’ in the country. These awards reflect the dedicated efforts of medical professionals and the government to enhance organ donation and transplantation services in Gujarat.

In the last five years, the awareness of organ donation has significantly increased in the state. This has led to a rise in the number of brain-dead organ donors. The state has established the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) to promote organ donation effectively.

The data from the last seven years shows that there have been 657 donors in Gujarat, resulting in 2039 organ donations. This initiative has saved countless lives and brought hope to many families facing dire medical conditions.

Health Minister Rushikesh Patel praised the achievements of Gujarat in the field of organ donation. He noted that the efforts of doctors, media cooperation, and the work of charitable organisations have transformed organ donation into a people’s movement. The aim is to reduce waiting times for organ transplantation and ensure that no living person in Gujarat needs to donate organs due to lack of options.

As we celebrate National Organ Donation Day, let’s remember the importance of this selfless act. Encouraging more people to consider organ donation can save many lives and promote a sense of humanity and compassion in society. Every organ donation has the potential to change lives and give hope to those in need. By raising awareness and educating the public, we can continue to make strides in this vital area of healthcare.
