In a remarkable effort, citizens of Gujarat have collected over 14,505 tonnes of plastic waste in just a few days. This initiative is part of the ‘World Environment Day 2025’ campaign, launched by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of the Government of India on May 22. The campaign aims to combat plastic pollution and runs until June 5.
During this period, Gujarat has shown strong leadership at the national level with more than 2,841 cleanliness programs conducted across the state. Over 232,064 environmentally conscious volunteers participated in these events, resulting in the significant collection of plastic waste.
The activities included cleanliness drives, tree planting, beach clean-ups, e-bike rallies, street plays, and distribution of cloth bags. There were also seminars focused on waste classification, plastic recycling, and implementing measures against single-use plastics. These events were crucial in raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices.
People from all walks of life joined this campaign enthusiastically. Various government departments, including Forest and Environment, Urban Development, and Rural Development, collaborated in this environmental effort. Local offices, municipal corporations, and industries also supported these initiatives.
To enhance the campaign’s reach, a 15-day radio awareness program has been launched across urban and rural areas of Gujarat, featuring posters, hoardings, and banners.
The disposal of over 14,505 tonnes of plastic waste, the messaging reaching millions, and thousands of newly planted trees mark a significant chapter in Gujarat’s environmental journey. Every citizen of Gujarat is becoming a soldier in the battle to save the environment. This wave of change has established Gujarat as a ‘Green Leader.’ The state government’s initiatives are just the beginning of a long journey. This journey will continue, inspiring future generations to participate and take action.
Through this campaign, Gujarat is not just addressing plastic pollution but also fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. The collective effort demonstrates the power of community action towards sustainable living, showing that together, we can make a difference for our planet.
