Recently, Gujarat celebrated World Lion Day at the Barada Wildlife Sanctuary in Devbhumi Dwarka district. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced that the range of Asiatic lions has expanded significantly over the last 25 years. The lions now inhabit 11 districts, up from just 3 districts in the past. This growth is a source of pride for the state and reflects successful conservation efforts.

During the celebration, Patel shared a message from the Bhagavad Gita, highlighting that among all creatures, the lion is a symbol of strength. After 143 years, lions have naturally re-established themselves in the Barada hills. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised support for lion conservation in this area. Under his vision and the proactive practices of the forest department, the lion population has been thriving.

The Chief Minister noted that the number of lions in Gujarat has increased from 674 to 891. This rise is attributed to dedicated conservation efforts and local community support. The relationship between the local residents and the lions is vital. Many believe that ‘if there are lions, we exist; if we exist, there are lions’.

The celebrations also marked the inauguration of new projects aimed at preserving the lion habitat. Union Minister for Forests and Environment, Bhupendra Yadav, praised Gujarat’s commitment to wildlife conservation under Modi’s leadership. Asiatic lions are now found only in the Gir region of Gujarat, highlighting its unique ecological significance.

As climate change poses challenges globally, Modi has introduced plans for renewable energy and climate action, seeking to protect the environment further. The state is taking extensive measures to ensure the lions are safeguarded for future generations.

At the ceremony, it was revealed that a budget of ₹180.12 crores has been allocated for new initiatives, including the establishment of a safari park and an interpretation center at the Barada Sanctuary. Additional funds will support breeding programs for endangered species and eco-tourism development.

Local officials stated that the celebration of World Lion Day in Barada is historic, marking the first time it has been held outside Gir. The local community is proud of the Asiatic lions and their contribution to Gujarat’s heritage.

The lion’s habitat has expanded significantly, with more areas now designated for their protection. This growth has been achieved through scientific management and cooperation from local communities. The state government is working hard to increase lion populations and ensure their safety in the wild.

The future looks bright for the Asiatic lions of Gujarat, with ongoing efforts to protect and expand their habitats. As local communities become more involved in conservation efforts, the bond between people and wildlife strengthens, ensuring that both can thrive together in this unique ecosystem.
