Gujarat Government Stands Firm on Tapi-Narmada Link Project Suspension

The Tapi-Narmada Link Project, first proposed in 1980, has been a topic of political debate in Gujarat. The Gujarat government officially suspended the project in 2022 after protests from the tribal community. Recently, the opposition has ramped up its campaign regarding this project, leading to renewed discussions in the Lok Sabha. Opposition leader Anant Patel announced plans for protests starting from August 14, which has sparked controversy among political parties.

Senior cabinet minister Rishikesh Patel reiterated that the government remains firm on its 2022 decision to suspend the project. He stated that the project was initially introduced by the government in 1980 and later reintroduced in 2011 under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared in 2017, but since then, no new DPR has been submitted.

The suspension announcement was made by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and MP C.R. Patil. Since then, there have been no movements by either the state or central government regarding the project. During discussions in the Rajya Sabha on February 10 and July 27, 2025, questions were raised about the project, but it was clarified that no new DPR had been introduced.

Union Minister C.R. Patil confirmed on August 10 that there is no intention from either government to advance the project. Minister Rishikesh Patel emphasized that the government is dedicated to the overall development and welfare of the tribal community. He accused the opposition of misleading the public for political gain.

The opposition, particularly the Congress party, is preparing for protests, claiming the government has not provided any official documents confirming the suspension. Tushar Chaudhary, an opposition leader, questioned why a need for announcements regarding the project has arisen in 2025 if it was already suspended in 2022. He asserted that the tribal community has lost faith in the government and is now protesting to protect their lands.

The ongoing debate has led to a planned rally in Dharampur, with similar events in Tapi and Dang districts. The BJP’s Dhaval Patel criticized the Congress for allegedly misleading tribal communities, asserting that the project’s suspension serves to protect their interests. He claimed the Congress is simply trying to gain political traction rather than advocating for the community’s well-being.

As tensions rise around the Tapi-Narmada Link Project, it remains unclear how the situation will unfold. Both sides have strong opinions, and the outcome of the protests may significantly impact the political landscape in Gujarat. The government stands firm on its decision, while the opposition rallies for awareness and action among the community. With the tribal community at the center of this conflict, the next few weeks will be critical in determining the future of this contentious project.
