In the past week, Gujarat has conducted inspections of more than 1,800 bridges across the state. This initiative comes after heavy rains damaged several roads and bridges. The state government is taking precautionary measures to ensure public safety during this critical time. A cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel reviewed the condition of various infrastructure projects, including bridges and roads. Rishikesh Patel, the government spokesperson, announced the issuance of tenders for the construction of a new bridge over the Gambhira River. This project will cost ₹212 crores and is expected to be completed in just 12 months, a significant reduction from the usual 18-month timeframe for such projects.
During the inspections, 133 bridges were identified as needing further examination. These bridges have been closed as a precautionary measure. Out of these, 20 bridges are closed to all vehicles, while 113 are only closed to heavy vehicles, allowing lighter vehicles to pass. The engineers from the department, along with expert consultants, carried out these inspections to assess the safety of the bridges.
In addition to the bridge inspections, the road and building department reported that heavy rains have affected 2.5% of the total 1.19 lakh km of roads in Gujarat. However, over 56% of the necessary patchwork on these damaged roads has already been completed. Furthermore, more than 70% of potholes have been filled, ensuring safer travel for residents and commuters.
The state has also launched the ‘Gujmarg’ application to facilitate better communication regarding road conditions. In just four days, the user count for this app increased significantly, reflecting public interest in road safety. The government encourages citizens to report any issues they encounter on the roads through this application as part of their efforts to enhance infrastructure.
As the rainy season continues, the state government is prioritising infrastructure repairs and safety. The ongoing monitoring and maintenance efforts are crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring that transportation remains efficient. The Chief Minister has urged all departments involved to work swiftly and effectively to address any issues that arise.
This comprehensive approach to bridge and road maintenance illustrates the commitment of the Gujarat government to public safety. With the completion of the new Gambhira bridge and ongoing inspections, residents can expect improvements in their daily commutes soon. The state is dedicated to providing a robust infrastructure that can withstand the challenges posed by heavy rainfall and other natural events.
In summary, Gujarat is taking significant steps to ensure the safety and reliability of its bridges and roads. The ongoing inspections and construction projects reflect a proactive approach to infrastructure management, aiming to safeguard the lives of its citizens while enhancing connectivity across the state.
