The Gujarat government has made an important decision to implement a 360-degree holistic assessment framework in all schools from grades 1 to 8. This plan focuses on evaluating students through various perspectives, including teachers, peers, parents, and the students themselves. The aim is to enhance the learning experience and ensure that education is not just about passing exams. Instead of relying solely on written tests, this new approach promotes continuous and all-encompassing assessment. It will encourage the overall development of children, not just their academic scores.

This initiative is in line with the National Education Policy 2020, which aims to improve the quality of education in India. The framework will encourage skills necessary for life rather than focusing solely on exam results. It aims to develop knowledge, skills, and values in children, allowing for a multidimensional growth experience.

Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Education Minister Dr Kuberbhai Dindor, this framework will be rolled out in schools across the state. An expert committee led by Dr Jayendrasinh Jadav has been formed to oversee the implementation. The committee has submitted its recommendations, which the government is now adopting.

In this 360-degree assessment, the evaluation will not only cover academic performance but will also include cognitive, emotional, and psychomotor development. A holistic progress card (HPC) will be prepared based on input from teachers, peers, parents, and the students themselves. This card will reflect not just the results but the overall progress of the student.

Teachers will assess student performance based on their participation in class activities, learning methods, and behaviour. Peers will evaluate cooperative behaviour and teamwork, fostering a sense of responsibility and mutual understanding among students. Parents will provide feedback on their child’s learning environment and behaviour at home, aiding schools in understanding the child’s overall personality.

Self-assessment will also be a key component, where students will evaluate their own performance and identify areas for improvement. This approach promotes self-awareness and self-development, crucial for their growth.

The new holistic progress card will help enhance creativity, responsibility, and self-confidence among students. It will provide comprehensive information on their cognitive, emotional, and psychomotor development. This collaborative evaluation process encourages critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork rather than rote learning.

Gujarat’s initiative is based on the principle of ‘As the education, so the assessment.’ This approach aims to develop self-confidence, responsibility, and a continuous improvement mindset in children, laying a strong foundation for their future.

In implementing this framework, the education department has consulted with teacher unions, experts, and social institutions to address current challenges. A comprehensive development framework tailored to Gujarat’s needs will be introduced based on guidelines developed by NCERT and PARAKH.

It is important to note that this framework aligns with the national standards set for CBSE schools and central schools. The goal is to prepare students for future challenges while making the education system more inclusive and comprehensive. The new assessment method is expected to reduce the burden of frequent written tests on students and lessen the data entry load on teachers, making the evaluation process simpler and more student-centric.

Overall, Gujarat’s 360-degree holistic assessment framework aims to create a more inclusive and effective learning environment for students, ensuring their development beyond mere academic success. This initiative will not only improve educational quality but also prepare students for the complexities of life ahead.
