Gujarat Leads with Video Conferencing for Court Appearances

Gujarat is making significant strides in the justice system by using video conferencing to present prisoners in court. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the efficiency of the justice process in the state. Under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi, the state is leveraging technology to streamline legal proceedings.

In the last six months, over 53,672 prisoners were presented in court via video conferencing. This method has not only saved time and human resources but also resulted in substantial financial savings for the police department. By reducing the need for physical transportation of inmates, the department can allocate its workforce to other critical tasks.

To strengthen this system, the Gujarat High Court installed 1,100 video conferencing units across various courts in the state in 2022. Out of these, 23 units were specifically assigned to jails to facilitate this process. Currently, there are 83 operational video conferencing systems in jails across Gujarat.

Statistics from the Gujarat Jail Department show positive outcomes from this initiative. Between January and June 2024, 40,633 inmates, approximately 29% of the total, were presented in court through video conferencing. This number is expected to rise to 41% in the first half of 2025, with a total of 53,672 inmates appearing in court. These figures highlight the success and increasing adoption of this method.

The effective implementation of video conferencing has allowed the police department to save on manpower and resources. It has opened opportunities for officers to take on additional responsibilities, thus improving departmental efficiency. This method has also expedited the justice process, ensuring that victims receive timely justice while offenders face appropriate penalties.

Gujarat’s initiative to use video conferencing for presenting prisoners in court underscores the state government’s commitment to improving the justice system through technology. Under the leadership of Police Chief Vikas Sahai and Jail DGP K.L.N. Rao, this forward-thinking approach is gaining momentum, paving the way for a more effective legal framework.

Overall, the integration of technology into the legal process in Gujarat demonstrates a significant shift towards modernising the justice system. This effort not only benefits the judicial process but also enhances the overall safety and efficiency of managing inmates, marking Gujarat as a leader in innovative justice practices in India.
