Gujarat Ranks 14th in Public Schools Despite Smart School Initiative

The Gujarat government has been promoting ‘smart’ schools, but the state still ranks low in the number of public schools. In the 2023-24 academic year, Gujarat has only 34,597 government schools. This puts the state at 14th place among Indian states, which is far from impressive. Uttar Pradesh leads the list with a staggering 1.37 lakh public schools. Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal follow with 92,439 and 82,307 schools respectively. Other states like Bihar, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh also have more public schools than Gujarat.

In recent years, Gujarat’s public school numbers have decreased. In the last five years, the state has shut down 443 government schools. The number of schools fell from 35,040 in 2019-20 to 34,651 in 2022-23. This decline raises concerns about educational access in the state.

While Gujarat’s government is focusing on smart schools, other states are expanding their public school systems. Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh have all increased their public school numbers this year.

The decline in Gujarat’s public schools is alarming. Many parents worry about the future of education in the state. The government’s smart school initiative aims to modernize education, but it seems not to be enough to increase the total number of schools.

Critics argue that focusing on smart schools while reducing the number of public schools is a misguided strategy. They believe that all children should have access to quality education, not just those in smart schools. Public schools are vital for ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, can receive an education.

The current statistics reveal a clear challenge for Gujarat. With only 34,597 public schools, the state is falling behind in providing accessible education. This is concerning for parents and educators who want to see improvement in their children’s learning environments.

The state government must reconsider its approach to education. An increase in the number of public schools is essential for providing equal opportunities for all students. As other states grow their school systems, Gujarat must act to ensure it does not lag further behind.

In conclusion, while the push for smart schools is commendable, it is essential for the Gujarat government to address the declining number of public schools. Education is a fundamental right, and every child deserves access to quality schooling. The future of Gujarat’s education system relies on both smart initiatives and an increase in public school numbers. Parents and educators alike hope for a more balanced approach that prioritizes access, quality, and innovation in education.
