In Gujarat, the state government has announced a significant initiative to help low-income families celebrate upcoming festivals. Starting in August, more than 7.5 million ration card holders will receive subsidised food items. This decision aims to support families classified under the Antyodaya and Below Poverty Line (BPL) schemes during festive seasons like Janmashtami.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Kunvarji Bavaliya revealed that the government will provide additional supplies of sugar and cooking oil at reduced prices. This initiative will benefit over 31.8 million family members who hold ration cards. The government plans to distribute one litre of double-filtered edible oil at a subsidised rate of ₹100 per litre.
Additionally, eligible BPL families will receive one kilogram of sugar at a rate of ₹22 per kilogram, while Antyodaya families will get it for ₹15 per kilogram. This distribution is part of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2013, which ensures that these families have access to affordable food.
Minister Bavaliya explained that under the public distribution system, families registered under the NFSA will receive essential items every month. These items include sugar, salt, chickpeas, and tuvar dal. The government aims to ensure that families can celebrate Janmashtami and Diwali with sufficient provisions.
On the upcoming Janmashtami festival in August 2025, the minister stated that families classified under the Antyodaya and priority groups will receive one kilogram of chickpeas at a subsidised rate of ₹30 per kilogram and tuvar dal at ₹50 per kilogram. Furthermore, one kilogram of salt will also be available for just ₹1 per kilogram.
The government has already started the distribution process to ensure that these essential food items reach ration shops by the beginning of August. This timely distribution will help beneficiaries celebrate the festivals with joy.
The Gujarat government is committed to providing food security and nutritional safety to its citizens through various welfare schemes. By ensuring that low-income families can access essential food items, the government aims to promote their overall development and well-being.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the quality of life for the people of Gujarat, especially during significant cultural celebrations. The distribution of subsidised food will not only help families meet their daily needs but also allow them to participate fully in the festive spirit without financial burden.
