Gujarat University (GU) is set to host its inter-college sports event starting on August 5, but the preparations are in chaos. Despite having improved sports facilities, the university is struggling with poor planning and miscommunication. This has left many affiliated colleges confused and students anxious about registering for the competitions.

Originally, GU asked affiliated colleges to submit the names of participants by July 25. However, not a single college responded by the deadline. To address this, the university extended the deadline to July 31. Unfortunately, confusion continued, and many colleges claimed they did not receive the official notice.

A university official explained, “In a meeting on July 30, instead of understanding why colleges were not responding, the university demanded that lists of participants be submitted in just one day.” This unrealistic expectation for colleges to finalize entries for over 30 events overnight has added to the frustration.

As a result, students have started to take matters into their own hands. Many are contacting GU’s sports department directly to register, bypassing their institutions. This is a clear sign of the disarray affecting the event.

The problems extend beyond registration issues. GU’s sports department has been without a permanent director for five years. A professor without a sports background has been managing it. This lack of leadership has contributed to the ongoing mismanagement of sports facilities. Promises of new infrastructure remain unfulfilled; for instance, the volleyball court has been repurposed for religious events, and the hockey field is cramped into a small area near the running track.

Though new badminton and tennis courts have been constructed, they are being handed over to a private agency. This has raised concerns about accessibility and transparency for students wishing to use these facilities.

The inter-college sports event will include competitions in various sports such as swimming, chess, badminton, table tennis, boxing, basketball, kabaddi, and many more. However, the ongoing mismanagement has cast a shadow over the university’s aim to promote a strong sports culture among students.

While Gujarat University has made efforts to create a vibrant sports environment, the current situation highlights the need for better planning and communication. It is crucial that the university addresses these issues promptly to ensure a successful event and to foster a genuine spirit of competition among students. Without significant changes, the mismanagement could undermine the university’s intentions and the experience of the students involved in the sports event.
