Gujarat’s Bridge Projects Under PMGSY-III Stalled for Six Years

Gujarat is facing a significant delay in bridge construction under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana-III (PMGSY-III). Launched in 2019, this scheme aims to improve rural connectivity by building roads and bridges. However, six years later, 83% of the sanctioned bridges in Gujarat remain incomplete.

Since the start of PMGSY-III, Gujarat was approved for 191 bridges. Sadly, only 33 of these bridges have been built. This means that work on 158 bridges is still pending. The state has done better with road construction. Out of 300 roads approved, 283 have been completed. This leaves just 5.6% of road work unfinished.

The slow progress on bridge projects raises concerns about the efficiency of both state and central governments. While road projects are moving forward, the bridge construction seems to be lagging behind.

The PMGSY-III scheme was designed to upgrade existing rural roads and build new ones. The goal is to connect rural areas to markets, schools, and hospitals. As of July 2025, India had approved 15,972 roads and 3,212 bridges under this scheme. Of these, 11,727 roads and 1,373 bridges have been completed nationwide.

In comparison, Gujarat’s share of the project appears small. The state received approval for 300 roads, which is only 1.87% of the national total, and 191 bridges, making up 5.94% of the national allocation. This limited allocation raises questions about the state’s commitment to developing its rural infrastructure.

Local leaders are urging the government to speed up bridge construction. They believe that better connectivity will improve the lives of people in rural areas. Without these bridges, communities may remain isolated and cut off from essential services.

The slow progress could also affect local economies. Farmers and small businesses depend on good roads and bridges to transport their goods. Delays in bridge construction could hurt their ability to reach markets.

In conclusion, while road projects in Gujarat are progressing well, the significant delays in bridge construction under PMGSY-III raise concerns. Local leaders and communities hope that the government will take action to complete these vital infrastructure projects. It is crucial for the development of rural areas and the overall economy of the state.
