In Gujarat, a new solar pump scheme is helping farmers save money and improve their livelihoods. Over 4,900 farming families have received more than ₹119 crore in assistance so far. This scheme aims to provide solar pump systems to salt farmers and other agricultural communities. The initiative was discussed in a recent meeting led by Minister of Salt Industry, Jagdish Vishwakarma, in Gandhinagar.
The solar pump systems are designed to reduce the annual diesel costs for farmers. Each family can save between ₹1.5 to ₹2 lakh a year on diesel expenses. This financial relief allows farmers to invest more in their businesses.
The solar pump scheme is part of a broader strategy to support the salt industry and improve the lives of salt farmers. Gujarat boasts the longest coastline in India, making it a key area for salt production. However, salt farmers often face various challenges, including limited access to resources and fluctuating weather conditions.
To address these issues, the state government is also focusing on education, healthcare, and infrastructure improvements in agricultural areas. For example, under the ‘School on Wheels’ programme, 38 mobile schools have been launched to provide educational resources to remote farming communities.
In healthcare, 20 mobile health units have been deployed to deliver medical services to salt farming areas. These initiatives have benefited over 371,000 individuals in the past two years, providing critical services such as outpatient care and laboratory tests.
The Empowered Committee, which oversees these initiatives, received positive feedback from local leaders. They reported that the scheme has helped families pay off debts over five years and reduced production costs by 70%. This has increased productivity and profitability, allowing farmers to sell their salt independently in the market.
The solar pump systems not only provide economic benefits but also contribute to sustainable farming practices. By using solar energy, farmers can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, making their operations more environmentally friendly.
As the scheme continues to expand, more farmers are expected to join the initiative. This aligns with the government’s goal of enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring the welfare of farming communities in Gujarat. The solar pump scheme is a shining example of how technology can empower farmers and transform their livelihoods for the better.
