In Gujarat, the Measurement Department recently conducted a state-wide operation targeting petrol and diesel pumps. This drive took place on July 18 and 19, covering 267 fuel stations across various cities and highways. The aim was to ensure compliance with legal standards and protect consumer rights. During the inspections, irregularities were found at 16 fuel pumps, leading to legal action and fines.
The inspections were part of a larger campaign organized by the office of the Controller of Legal Metrology and Consumer Affairs. Officials from the Measurement Department, including deputy controllers and inspectors, carried out random checks to uphold laws governing fuel sales. The operation spanned all 33 districts of the state, demonstrating the government’s commitment to consumer protection.
The checks revealed several violations at the petrol and diesel pumps. Issues included the lack of required delivery measuring standards and failure to properly certify dispensing units. Such irregularities can often lead to consumers being cheated while purchasing fuel. Customers frequently rely on these pumps for their daily needs and travel, making it crucial for them to receive the correct amount of fuel.
The authorities found that some pumps were delivering less fuel than what customers paid for. For instance, a shocking discovery was made in Bhilwada, where it was reported that 35 millilitres were missing for every 5 litres of petrol sold. This prompted immediate action, with three nozzles sealed to prevent further malpractice.
Fuel stations play a vital role in the daily lives of consumers. With many people purchasing petrol and diesel for travel, it is important that they are not shortchanged. The recent drive aims to raise awareness among consumers about their rights and the importance of reporting discrepancies.
The Measurement Department expressed that these inspections are necessary to maintain transparency and accountability in the fuel supply chain. They encourage consumers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities at fuel stations. This initiative not only helps in consumer protection but also promotes fair business practices among fuel station operators.
The drive is expected to continue, with further investigations into the irregularities found. The government aims to ensure that all petrol and diesel pumps comply with the established laws and provide the correct amount of fuel to customers. The department is also keen on maintaining the integrity of the fuel supply system in Gujarat.
As the inspections progress, consumers are urged to remain informed and proactive about their rights. The Measurement Department is committed to safeguarding these rights and ensuring that every consumer receives fair treatment at fuel stations throughout the state.
