On October 2, 2023, in Gandhinagar, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced an inspiring vision for urban development in Gujarat for the year 2025. This plan aims to prepare a roadmap for the development of major cities and towns in the state. The Chief Minister stressed the need for time-bound planning to ensure effective implementation of this vision.
During his address at the launch of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation’s development vision, he stated that competitions should be held to recognise the best urban development visions. He expressed a desire for Gujarat’s cities to lead the way in urban development across India.
The Chief Minister also took the opportunity to honour sanitation workers in Gandhinagar, who had recently received national recognition for their efforts in cleanliness. He emphasised the shared responsibility of citizens to maintain Gandhinagar’s newly acquired status as a clean and green city.
Patel noted the significant changes brought about by the celebration of Urban Development Year in 2005, which transformed the definition of urban development into a holistic approach. He highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was Chief Minister at that time, the focus shifted towards citizen-centric services using technology, moving beyond just basic infrastructure like roads and drainage.
The success of the 2005 Urban Development Year celebration has resulted in vibrant cities in Gujarat, with a new framework for urban development. Patel stated that this year marks the celebration of two decades of achievements in urban development, leading to a world-class city development focus for 2025.
To support this vision, the state government has increased the urban development budget by 40%, allocating ₹30,000 crores for this year. The Chief Minister expressed hope that the cities of Gujarat would achieve smart and sustainable development, aligning with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for a developed India by 2047.
He also encouraged large-scale water conservation and storage efforts, as well as the expansion of urban forests and green cover. Patel called for a collective effort to maintain environmental sustainability while pursuing development. He advocated for the adoption of solar rooftops and increased use of e-mobility solutions.
This ambitious plan is set to transform the urban landscape of Gujarat, ensuring that cities not only thrive economically but also maintain a commitment to sustainability and quality of life for their residents. The focus on competition and recognition in urban planning is expected to motivate local authorities to innovate and excel in their development efforts.
As Gujarat moves forward with this vision, the Chief Minister’s call for community participation and technological integration will play a crucial role in shaping the future of urban living in the state. The success of these initiatives will depend on collaboration among government bodies, citizens, and various stakeholders in the urban development sector.
