On August 1, just two days before National Organ Donation Day, Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital witnessed its 202nd organ donation. This significant event was marked by a touching story of love and sacrifice. Ganpatbhai Shrimali donated the organs of his brain-dead son, Dhirajbhai, fulfilling a noble wish to help others in need.
Dhirajbhai, a 45-year-old resident of Saijpur Bogha, had struggled with epilepsy for 25 years. On July 28, he suffered a severe episode and was rushed to the Civil Hospital. Sadly, after more than 72 hours of intensive treatment, doctors declared him brain-dead on August 1.
Ganpatbhai shared his decision to donate his son’s organs with deep emotion. “I have seen my son suffer for a long time and understand the pain of those who are seriously ill. By donating his organs, I hope to reduce that pain for others,” he said.
The medical team at the hospital explained the organ donation process to Ganpatbhai and his family. After thoughtful consideration, he agreed to the donation. This act allowed him to keep his son’s memory alive through those who would receive these vital organs.
The hospital’s superintendent, Dr. Rakesh Joshi, noted that this donation is part of a larger effort at the Civil Hospital, where 202 organ donations have taken place, leading to 664 organs being donated and giving new life to 645 people.
For Dhirajbhai, his organs were allocated to those in urgent need. One liver and two kidneys were sent to the Kidney Hospital at the Civil Medicity Campus. His heart was given to UN Mehta Hospital, while his two eyes were donated to M&J Eye Hospital. This generous contribution showcases the impact that a single individual can have on the lives of many.
Organ donation is a vital issue in India and around the world. Many people wait for organ transplants, and the need for donors continues to grow. The act of donating organs not only saves lives but also brings hope to families who are suffering.
As National Organ Donation Day approaches on August 3, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of organ donation. It encourages people to consider registering as donors, as one donor can save up to eight lives.
Ganpatbhai’s story is a poignant example of selflessness. It highlights how, in the face of tragedy, there can be hope and healing for others. By making the choice to donate, he has turned his loss into a legacy of life, inspiring others to think about the impact they can have on those in need.
As communities come together to promote organ donation, stories like that of Ganpatbhai and Dhirajbhai remind us that every decision to donate is a decision to give life. This National Organ Donation Day, let us honour such acts of kindness and encourage more individuals to step forward as donors.
