The Gujarat government has launched a special project to elevate the historic and ancient city of Vadnagar in Mehsana district. This project aims to make Vadnagar the first slum-free city in Gujarat. The plan includes the removal of over 300 encroachments from approximately 15 slum areas within the city. This will allow for the renovation and expansion of various roads in Vadnagar. New public amenities such as parks, playgrounds, market spaces, and community halls will be developed as part of this initiative.
Residents of the slum areas who currently live in two houses will be provided with new housing. Sources indicate that the work is expected to begin after the monsoon season. To ensure the success of Vadnagar’s development, a special committee has been formed. This committee includes the district collector of Mehsana, a regional commissioner from the municipal corporation, and other officials responsible for urban planning in the area.
The committee’s responsibilities will include identifying land for the affected families and creating a final list of eligible families. They will also oversee the approval of a slum survey conducted by the municipal corporation. The aim is to ensure a systematic removal of slums in phases and provide permanent housing to the residents.
In addition to the housing project, the committee will make sure that quality standards are maintained throughout the construction process. They will also be responsible for moving slum residents to temporary housing until their new homes are ready. If necessary, they will determine monthly rent for families living in slums to ensure their welfare during this transition. Recently, a committee meeting approved a list of 300 families who will receive housing from the municipal corporation, speeding up the process of making Vadnagar a slum-free city.
Vadnagar is not only significant for its historical importance but also as the birthplace of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is located at an elevation of around 143 meters above sea level. The city is home to several national monuments, including Ajpal Kund (Gauri Kund), Arjun Bari Gate, and Kirti Toran, which attract visitors. Vadnagar is well-connected to major cities in Gujarat through public transport routes and has a railway station linking it to other places in the state and country.
This ambitious project is expected to bring a new wave of development and prosperity to Vadnagar, improving the lives of many residents and preserving the city’s rich history. As the project unfolds, it will be closely monitored to ensure that it meets its goals and serves as a model for other cities in Gujarat and beyond.
