Indian Railways to Enhance Passenger Safety with CCTV Cameras in Coaches

In a significant move to boost passenger safety, Indian Railways has announced plans to install CCTV cameras in all 74,000 passenger coaches and 15,000 locomotives across the country. This decision comes after successful trials, which showed positive results in deterring crime and ensuring passenger safety.

The initiative was reviewed by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu in a high-level meeting on July 12, 2025. Senior officials from the Railway Board were also present to discuss the progress of the CCTV installation plan.

Each coach will be equipped with four dome-type CCTV cameras, with two cameras positioned at each entrance. This setup is designed to monitor common movement areas without invading passenger privacy. In locomotives, six cameras will be installed, including one each at the front, rear, and both sides. Additionally, two microphones will be mounted on the driver’s desk to enhance surveillance capabilities.

The new CCTV system promises 360-degree high-resolution coverage, even in low-light conditions and at train speeds exceeding 100 km/h. Railway officials have assured that the cameras will be STQC certified, ensuring they meet high standards of quality. The Minister has also encouraged the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to process data captured by the cameras, aiming to improve real-time threat detection.

The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance safety and security for passengers. With the presence of CCTV cameras, it is expected that incidents of theft and harassment will decrease significantly, providing passengers with more confidence during their travels.

While the installation of CCTV cameras is a step forward in modernising Indian Railways, it has raised concerns about privacy. To address these issues, the cameras will be strategically placed in areas where they will not intrude into passengers’ private spaces. The cameras will primarily monitor entrances and common areas, thus respecting the privacy of individuals.

Officials have stated that this initiative reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to creating a safer and more secure travel environment. With the rapid advancement of technology, the integration of modern surveillance systems is essential to tackle contemporary challenges in passenger safety.

Moreover, the railway officials highlighted the importance of ensuring that the cameras provide clear footage, even at high speeds and in dim lighting. This is crucial for identifying any potential threats and responding promptly to incidents.

The decision to expand the CCTV installation follows a pilot project that successfully tested the system in select coaches. Feedback from passengers and railway staff indicated that the presence of cameras helped deter criminal activities and improved overall safety perception.

With this initiative, Indian Railways aims to set a benchmark in safety standards in public transport. The deployment of advanced surveillance technology not only enhances security but also aligns with global trends towards smart transportation solutions.

As the project rolls out, passengers can expect a more secure environment while travelling by train. The railway ministry has reiterated its dedication to passenger welfare and safety, ensuring that travel remains a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

In conclusion, the installation of CCTV cameras in Indian Railways’ coaches is a transformative step towards enhancing passenger safety. While addressing privacy concerns, this initiative promises to make rail travel safer and more secure for millions of passengers across India.
