India is on the verge of a major milestone in its transport sector. The first bullet train, linking Mumbai and Ahmedabad, is set to launch soon. This new service will drastically reduce travel time between the two cities to just two hours and seven minutes. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made this announcement on August 3, during a virtual flag-off ceremony from Bhavnagar. He stated, “The first bullet train from Mumbai to Ahmedabad will start very soon, and the work on the project is going on at a fast pace.” This bullet train service is part of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project. The train will cover a distance of 508 kilometers at a maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour. This speed is a significant leap from the current fastest train, which takes over six hours to cover the same route. The MAHSR project will have 12 stations along the route, including major stops at Vapi, Surat, Vadodara, Anand, and Sabarmati. The total cost of the project is estimated to be ₹1.08 lakh crore (approximately £11.2 billion), with Japan’s International Cooperation Agency (JICA) funding a large portion of the expenses. The project has faced delays but is now moving forward rapidly. Vaishnaw highlighted additional railway initiatives in Gujarat, including new trains and infrastructure improvements. Among these are a new train between Porbandar and Rajkot, a ₹135 crore coach maintenance facility at Ranavav station, and two Gati Shakti cargo terminals. Vaishnaw also mentioned the broader progress in railway infrastructure across India, showcasing the achievements under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He noted that 34,000 kilometers of new railway tracks have been laid over the last 11 years, with 1,300 railway stations being redeveloped. This redevelopment is part of a significant push to modernize India’s railway system. The bullet train is expected to enhance connectivity between the bustling financial hub of Mumbai and the vibrant city of Ahmedabad, fostering economic growth and improving travel convenience for millions. The completion of the Gujarat section of the corridor is targeted for December 2027, while the entire project is anticipated to be finished by December 2029. The launch of the bullet train marks a new era in Indian rail travel, merging speed and technology to transform the way people travel across long distances. As the project progresses, it will serve as a pivotal development in India’s transport infrastructure, setting a benchmark for future projects.
