Jamnagar, a city in Gujarat, is taking action to demolish 1,404 dangerous residential buildings that have been deemed unsafe since 2018. To prevent any accidents during the monsoon season, the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation conducts a pre-monsoon survey every year. Recently, the authorities surveyed 147 buildings and issued notices to their owners, asking them to repair or vacate them to ensure public safety.
The survey was conducted by six teams from the Technical, Estate, and Fire departments. These teams checked the condition of the buildings in the old areas of Jamnagar, especially in the T.P. Scheme and Estate areas. In May, the teams began their work, focusing on the structures that were previously marked as dilapidated.
Last year, many buildings were identified as hazardous, and some repairs were made. The survey covered all 19 wards, particularly the older sections of Jamnagar, where many traditional houses still stand. During this month’s survey, the teams noticed that parts of the buildings, such as balconies and parapets, were in danger of collapsing. Notices were sent to residents, advising them to remove unsafe parts of their homes to prevent accidents.
In the past year, the municipality has demolished 117 flats from the 1,404 housing project flats, which had also been marked as unsafe. Similarly, 348 flats in the Housing Board’s Sadhna Colony have been torn down. The authorities are preparing to demolish more of these hazardous structures, ensuring that safety is prioritized within the city.
The municipal corporation’s commitment to public safety is clear. They aim to prevent any accidents that could occur during heavy rains. This proactive approach is crucial for the well-being of the city’s residents, especially those living in older buildings that may not withstand severe weather conditions.
In a recent standing committee meeting, chaired by Chairman Nilesh Kaghthra, the municipality approved funds for various development projects. These projects include Rs. 48.56 lakhs for pre-monsoon work and Rs. 123.17 lakhs for stormwater drainage in Ward 16. Additionally, Rs. 100 lakhs were allocated for the construction of CC roads and blocks in Ward 3.
The meeting also confirmed that Reliance Industries would develop a circle near the town hall, further improving the city’s infrastructure. The overall development plan includes strengthening and upgrading existing water pipelines in various zones, ensuring that residents have access to safe and reliable water supply.
The municipality’s efforts to address the issues of dangerous buildings and improve infrastructure demonstrate their commitment to enhancing the quality of life for Jamnagar residents. As the rainy season approaches, these measures are vital in safeguarding the community from potential hazards related to dilapidated structures.
Through these initiatives, Jamnagar aims to create a safer environment for its inhabitants, showing a strong commitment to urban development and public safety. The city’s proactive measures will not only help in preventing accidents but also contribute to the overall development of Jamnagar as a thriving urban center.
