Arvind Kejriwal, the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held a rally in Modasa, Gujarat, aimed at farmers and livestock owners. This event, called the ‘Kisan Pashupalan Mahapanchayat’, was intended to address the issues faced by farmers in Gujarat. However, it was marked by a surprising lack of attendance, with many chairs remaining empty.
During the rally, Kejriwal criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, claiming that corruption and arrogance had peaked after 30 years of their governance in Gujarat. He pointed out the recent incident where police used force against farmers protesting for fair milk prices, which tragically resulted in the death of a farmer named Ashok Chaudhary.
Kejriwal expressed his sorrow over this loss, stating that despite the unfortunate event, the government had failed to provide any compensation to Chaudhary’s family. He accused the government of making false promises of bonuses to farmers as a distraction when they learned AAP leaders were visiting.
Gopal Italia, another AAP leader, echoed Kejriwal’s sentiments and accused the BJP of exploiting farmers’ rights and funds to build luxurious facilities. He lamented that despite India gaining independence 75 years ago, the farmers still needed to hold a rally to demand their rights, showcasing a sad state of affairs.
Isudan Gadhvi, an AAP leader, warned that the BJP’s mistreatment of farmers would result in consequences in the upcoming elections. He emphasized that the BJP’s arrogance, exemplified by their actions against farmers, would not be forgotten by the voters.
Kejriwal also took a direct aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that Modi’s foreign trips were aimed at securing contracts for businessmen like Gautam Adani instead of addressing the needs of ordinary citizens. He reaffirmed that AAP stands for the rights of the poor and farmers, pledging to fight for their dignity and entitlements.
Kejriwal’s speech resonated with the audience as he highlighted the ongoing corruption in dairy operations and the flawed weighing machines used against farmers, leading to their exploitation. He made it clear that AAP would continue to fight for farmers’ rights and would not tolerate further oppression from the government.
The rally served as a significant platform for AAP to promote its message and gather support among farmers in Gujarat. Kejriwal’s passionate address aimed to connect with the agricultural community and challenge the status quo maintained by the BJP. As elections approach, such rallies become critical for political parties to rally support and convey their agendas, especially in states like Gujarat where farming is a major livelihood.
Despite the low turnout, the messages conveyed during the event may resonate with farmers facing hardships in a state known for its agricultural output. The AAP leaders’ focus on farmers’ rights and their criticisms of government actions will likely play a role in shaping discussions leading up to the elections.
