Keshod Airport in Gujarat is undergoing a significant upgrade. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to extend the runway to 2,500 metres. This extension will allow larger aircraft to operate, including the Airbus A320. The total cost of this development is estimated at ₹364 crore. Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, provided details about this project in the Rajya Sabha. He responded to questions from MP Parimal Nathwani regarding the airport’s expansion.
The runway extension will cost approximately ₹190.56 crore and is expected to be completed by January 2027. Alongside the runway, a new terminal building is also in the works. This terminal will cover 6,500 square metres and is designed to handle 400 arriving and 400 departing passengers during peak hours. The construction of the terminal has a budget of ₹142.17 crore. The tender for building the terminal has already been issued, with a 15-month completion timeline once the work begins.
MP Nathwani expressed optimism about the upgrades. He believes that expanding Keshod Airport will boost tourism in the region. The airport will make it easier for wildlife enthusiasts to visit the nearby Gir National Park, which is home to the only Asiatic lions in the world. Additionally, the upgraded airport will serve devotees traveling to the Somnath temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India.
The improvements at Keshod Airport are part of a broader strategy to enhance infrastructure and support tourism in Gujarat. The government aims to make travel more accessible for both domestic and international visitors.
This expansion will likely lead to increased flight options and better connectivity for the area. With the airport’s new capabilities, Keshod is expected to become a key entry point for travelers looking to explore the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Gujarat.
Moreover, the upgrade is timely, as it aligns with ongoing efforts to promote tourism in India. The government is keen on attracting more visitors, particularly to its renowned sites like Gir National Park and Somnath temple.
In summary, Keshod Airport is set for major changes that will enhance its capacity and improve airport services. The runway extension and new terminal are critical components of this project. Completion is anticipated by early 2027, which will open up new opportunities for tourism and travel in the region. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and making it easier for people to travel to Gujarat’s rich attractions.
