Keshod Airport, located near Gir National Park and Somnath Temple in Gujarat, is set for an upgrade. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has plans to extend the runway to 2500 meters. This will allow the operation of larger AB-320 type aircraft. The development project has an estimated cost of Rs 364 crore. This information was given by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, in a recent statement to the Rajya Sabha.
The runway extension project will cost around Rs 190.56 crore. It is scheduled for completion within 18 months, with a target date of January 2027. A new terminal building will also be part of the airport’s upgrade. This building will cover 6,500 square meters and can accommodate 400 arriving and 400 departing passengers at the same time. The construction tender for the new terminal has been issued, with a completion timeline of 15 months from the work order date.
The upgrade is vital for tourism and local economies. Parimal Nathwani, a member of Parliament, highlighted the importance of this project. With the airport’s upgrade, it will be easier for wildlife enthusiasts to visit Gir National Park. This park is home to the last remaining Asiatic lions in the world.
Moreover, the Keshod Airport will improve access for devotees visiting the historic Somnath Temple. This temple is one of the twelve revered Jyotirlingas in India. Nathwani stated that the airport will make it easier for both domestic and international visitors to reach this significant site.
Currently, Keshod Airport does not have scheduled flights. Since January 2025, several flights have been cancelled due to aircraft issues. This has affected travel plans for many people. The government has expressed its commitment to enhancing safety and restoring confidence in air travel after recent incidents, including a plane crash in Ahmedabad. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered more safety inspections and audits to improve aviation safety in India.
In summary, the Keshod Airport expansion is a significant step forward for Gujarat. With an upgraded runway and new terminal, it will better serve tourists and local communities. The expected completion date in January 2027 marks an exciting development for the region. Residents and visitors alike can look forward to improved connectivity and access to the wonders of Gir National Park and Somnath Temple.
