The Kharicut Canal in Ahmedabad is set for major redevelopment. On March 11, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel approved a budget of Rs 1,003 crore for Phase 2 of the project. This project aims to improve the canal’s infrastructure to benefit the city’s residents. The Kharicut Canal has a long history. It was built during the British era in 1881 to supply water for irrigation. However, over time, it has deteriorated and become polluted due to neglect and urban development. The canal runs for about 80 km, with 28 km falling under the jurisdiction of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
The first phase of the redevelopment began in 2022 and covered 12.75 km. It has been successful, with over Rs 700 crore already spent. However, more work is needed to address flooding and pollution issues. The second phase will focus on eight stretches of the canal, covering 22.5 km. These stretches will connect important areas such as the SP Ring Road, Naroda crematorium, and Ghodasar.
The redevelopment will also include constructing stormwater drains. This will help manage excess rainwater and reduce flooding during monsoons. The project aims to transform the canal into a six-lane mobility corridor, improving traffic flow while enhancing public health conditions. The AMC has also promised to develop parks and other public amenities along the canal, creating a more pleasant environment for residents.
Local officials believe that the project will significantly reduce health risks linked to the canal’s current state. The canal has been known to harbor waste and has been a source of pollution. The redevelopment aims to clean the canal and improve the surrounding areas, making them safer and more accessible.
In summary, the Kharicut Canal redevelopment project is an essential step toward improving Ahmedabad’s infrastructure. It will address ongoing issues related to pollution, flooding, and public health. With the approval of the second phase, the AMC is set to make significant progress in revitalizing this historic waterway.
